Avakai Biryani – Melody is its forte

- Sundeep Reddy

Anish Kuruvilla, the director of Avakai Biryani, and Shekar Kammula, who is producing this movie, go a long way back. Anish teamed up with Shekar for Dollar Dreams [in which, if you didn’t know or remember, he also acted as the main lead], Anand and Godavari. While Shekar was involved in creating some happy moments for us in Happy Days, Anish branched off to vent out his rage and frustrations in The Confessions of a Filmmaker, his debut film as a director, by directly assaulting the Telugu film industry in a forthcoming and outrageously shocking manner with Kamal Kamaraju in the lead. Now, these three come together with this interestingly titled movie introducing Bindhu Madhavi as the heroine.

Manikanth Kadri, son of renowned saxophone player PadmaSri Kadri Gopinath, makes a fabulous debut as a music director with this soundtrack. Comparisons with KM Radhakrishnan may seen inevitable since 1) Shekar and Anish worked with KMR for both Anand and Godavari and 2) melody that oozes out of this soundtrack ala the musical score for both Anand and Godavari. But regardless, Manikanth triumphs and wins you over with his surreal melodies.

Vanamali, whose name has now become synonymous with quality, pens all the lyrics and his work is appreciable.

1. Nannu Choopagala Addam full starhalf
This haunting melody sung remarkably by both Karthik and Swetha is one of the best romantic numbers in recent times. Karthik gets a major share of the pie here and is as impressive as he always is. Manikanth’s heavenly orchestration in this track, which has just one stanza, speaks volumes of his penchant for melody.

2. Veerudena starnil
With wonderful saxophone interludes, this number, where the girl possibly is dreaming about her guy, boasts of a dreamy rendition by Shreya Ghoshal. She adds so much charm to this track that on the surface though it sounds, lyrics wise, as yet another song about a girl pondering over her thoughts about her guy, it is mainly because of Shreya that this number works so well. A must listen for Shreya’s fans. Karthik gives her brief company singing one line. The opening and ending humming bits seem to be sung by Manikanth.

3. Nadiche Yedu Adugullo starstarnil
As fresh as a whiff of the morning breeze, this shortest number in this soundtrack with a slight tinge of Irish music is further enhanced by Vanamali’s situational lyrics and impressive vocals of Naresh Iyer and Chitra.

4. Chindesi Chinna Pedda nilnil
A foot tapping hero worship number. It’s the first time that these three talented singers - Ranjith, Rahul Nambiar and Tippu – come together to sing a Telugu song.

5. Maamidi Kommaku fullfullfullhalfnil
Vanamali’s words shine in this situational number that has faint traces of Rahman like sound here and there. While Saindhavi sounds very good, Manikanth’s voice, sounding like that of Jassie Gift’s, isn’t all that appealing.

6. Adigadigo fullfullfullfullnil
Another short, single stanza track but is a soothing melody. Karthik’s voice suits the mood of the song perfectly. Vanamali’s lyrics like – ee samayam yE talapulanO tana gurutuga viDicheltundO - are noteworthy. Female humming isn’t credited.

To cut a long story short, this is a fabulous foray into Telugu film music by Manikanth with melody as his forte.

Tailpiece:
Gautham Vasudev Menon, Surya and Harris Jayaraj’s latest soundtrack – Surya S/O Krishnan – is out and if you haven’t tried it, it’s worth your time. Its Harris’s best work in a long time. Don’t miss it and since it’s a dubbed movie, you’ll have to force yourself to not fret about the lyrics, which thanks to Veturi are not all that bad actually.
