Review

Story
Daniel (Rana Daggubati) is a highly influential person. He travels through a forest area and is caught by excise people for carrying excess alcohol. Daniel, who is in a state of inebriation, manhandles a policeman. That’s when cop Bheemla Nayak enters the scene and arrests him. Later they realize that Daniel is well connected at higher levels. By then, Bheemla Nayak registers an FIR against Daniel. Things get escalated and ego comes into play between these two people. Rest of the story is about the conflict between Daniel and Bheemla and how it gets resolved.

Artists Performance

Pawan Kalyan has done a fiery character after a long time. He has shown consistency and conviction throughout. He stayed within the character and enthralled mass lovers and fans without stepping out of it. Pawan Kalyan has got very fiery eyes and they were used to maximum effect in one confrontational scene. Rana Daggubati came up with an outstanding performance in the film. It’s not an easy feat to match up to the screen presence and aura of Pawan Kalyan. Rana Daggubati justified the role 100% and made sure that the confrontational scenes clicked well. Nithya Menen is good as the wife of Pawan Kalyan. Samyuktha Menen is dignified as the wife of Rana. Samuthirakani is perfect as the egoistic/feudalistic father of Rana. Murali Sharma is highly engaging as the superior of Bheemla Naik. Rao Ramesh's character is created for the Telugu version and he is neat. Though Tanikella Bharani and Raghu Babu roles are small, their performances are good and these characters are vital.

Technical departments

Story - screenplay - direction: Bheemla Nayak is an official remake of Malayalam blockbuster Ayyappanum Koshiyam. The run time of the original is around 175 minutes. The makers of the Telugu remake have cut down the length by 30 minutes to make the film more compact and to the point. They have made a couple of important changes to the story to make it more relatable to Telugu audiences. In the Malayalam version, Biju Menon character rises to prominence in the narration as the story unveils. It’s more like an underdog story with a terrific flashback value. It’s very important to change the characterization to suit Pawan Kalyan’s image and to his personal value-system. The writers have created a mass persona right from the first shot to Bheemla Nayak character and maintain the tempo consistently throughout. The director Saagar Chandra has succeeded in creating tension whenever Bheemla and Daniel meet. Screenplay written by Trivikram has pace and it doesn’t allow us to relax and ponder over it. Just when we think the climax of the film has become too massy, there is a nice twist that puts the entire story into a different perspective. Director Saagar K Chandra proves his mettle directing a big mass film.

Other departments: Music scored by Thaman is a huge plus. The songs have become rage even before the release. The background music in the film is pulsating. However, the much appreciated melody Antha Istamendayya is not there in the movie. Dialogues by Trivikram add value. Cinematography by Ravi K Chandran is good. He has added rustic character to the visuals with his work. Art direction by AS Prakash is good. Editing by Naveen Nooli is decent. Action choreography is well designed. Production values by Sithata Entertainments banner are grand.

Analysis: Pawan Kalyan goes into a zone when he gets the right character. Bheemla Nayak is one such character. His body language and expressive eyes help the character establish very strongly with the audiences. Rana’s intense performance as a man with loads of ego turned out to be the right choice to be pitted against Pawan Kalyan. When you have two actors of such caliber and when the content supports such conflicts, those scenes get a high mileage. The makers have adapted the basic story line and amped it up to cater to hardcore masses. I had seen the original, it was a class take. And Bheemla Nayak is a mass take on the same content. On the whole, Bheemla Nayak is made for the masses and has all the ingredients to work big at the box office.
