CHAKRA

April 30, 2006
tell a friend

India, the ancient country which is rich in its culture and tradition. The greatest contribution of India to the world is the number '0' (zero). Just imagine a world without zero. Today the entire world is digital and digital is nothing but permutation and combination of two numbers, zero and one.

The 'Wheel', which is most important, pivotal and the nuclii of the life has been contributed to the world by this spiritually enriched country. It's difficult to even think life without wheel. The entire world runs on wheel.

'Chakra' is a Sanskrit word which means Wheel in English.

Something that repeats again and again with equal intervals is wheel. Musically something that repeats again and again is called 'rhythm'. When we interprete a wheel in the form of sound is 'Rhythm'. So the characteristic of a Chakra (i.e., Wheel) and Rhythm are interrelated. The character of a chakra depends on the number of spokes in it. Similarly the character of one particular rhythm depends on number of beats in it. Some number of beats with equal interval finishing one cirle will define the measure of one bar. Visually number of spokes in a rhythm. The time signature is defined with the number of spokes in a Chakra (i.e,rhythm).

The Indian music is known for its subtle nuances and it is also popular for its strong technicality. It is scientifically and medically proved that the Indian music is popular for the nine facets of the moods (what we call Navarasas), in which the rythm is interwoven along with the melody and also plays a major role parallelly to the Indian music. 'Taala' the name given to the rythmic cycle has got different structural forms of the beats.

The experimentation in this album is using most unusual time signatures like 11/16, 13/16, 15/16, 17/16, 19/16 and so on. Probably this is for the first time in the world an album comprised of these many unusual time signatures.

It's a fusion of Indian music with rest of the world music.
It's an original music and not inspired from any existing music.

Mr.R.P.Patnaik feels this album 'CHAKRA' as his best work till date.
