"Freedom of speech and expression"

ram gopal Varma

13 November 2009

I wonder if it holds any significance in our current state of affairs. What are we afraid of?

I just am compelled to write this when I read the news of censor board rejecting "Leader" trailer for having voice bytes of some government workers. Those voices are not targeted to specific individuals and people of our state are not new to assembly live broadcasts. Any one who watches TV already know the hate speeches and bad mouthing by various leaders in the assembly which has become so ridiculously acceptable to every one but yet censor board objects it?.

Its important to understand that Art imitates life and vice- versa, the moment politics control censor board, art and projection of realism goes down the drain and movies go far from inspiration and close to escapism.

I would like to add my views to this article.

The only reason I see Censor board acting this way is Cinema is much more broad means of Communications and will be reaching the masses more effectively. But, however I would like to raise a strong objection against Censor board for doing such things. If having the voice of some government Workers is accounted as an objection then what about the programs like “Vikata Kavi in TV9” and “Betala in TV5” which are couple of many programs aired in all the news channels where they criticize and imitate all the Political leaders and government officials???

The only reason is all that all these so called representatives of “Fourth Estate” are pawns of some or the other Political parties and can do any thing with the influence they have. When it comes to Movies apart from censor board none can be influenced and the voices raised against the Government or any political parties are been suppressed. It is a very unfortunate situation that we are in where we are deprived of our “Freedom of Speech” and “Freedom of Expression”. This has been evident in the recent past where Ram Gopal Varma’s “Rann” & Krishna Vamsi’s “Mahatma” were Strongly objected for some songs.

We will need to remember the Newton’s theory that “How much ever hard you try to suppress a thing it will hit back much more Stronger on you”….

Hope a day will Come in Indian Cinema where we are free to express anything. We need to learn from the Hollywood movies like “Fahrenheit 9/11” where they criticize the President of United States directly.
