When the makers of Agent, directed by Surender Reddy, dropped a glimpse of Malayalam megastar Mammootty from the film by captioning it as ‘The Devil Ruthless Saviour’ earlier this March, many assumed that the screen icon will be seen as an army officer. But that is far from true as our sources tell us that Mammootty, who made a comeback to Telugu cinema with Yatra (2019), is essaying the role of a RAW chief in the espionage thriller. “Akhil Akkineni will be reporting to Mammootty in the film. Their interesting dynamics make and drive the story forward. Besides an interesting psyche, Mammootty has got a layered role—a fact that led him to give his nod to the project after the first narration itself,” a source close to the unit confirms to us.

Agent, also peppered with a generous dose of humour, is a joint production venture between Anil Sunkara’s AK Entertainments and Surender Reddy’s Surrender2Cinema. Debutante Sakshi Vaidya is cast opposite Akhil, while the supporting cast comprises the likes of Rao Ramesh, Murali Sharma and Posani Krishna Murali. Vakkantham Vamsi has penned the story of the film, while Ragul Herian Dharuman is the cinematographer. Hip Hop Tamizha is composing tunes, marking his second collaboration with Surender after Dhruva.

The film’s unit is presently in Manali, where they will stay till the end of this month, filming some key portions. This new outing, it is believed, will witness close to 70 percent of the film being wrapped up. An announcement about the teaser release date is around the corner.
