Synopsis:

Oliver (Ryan O'Neal) is an extremely rich youngster studying for his graduation. Jennifer (Ali MacGraw) is a relatively poor girl. They fall in love and want to get married. Oliver’s father does not agree to their marriage. Oliver leaves his father’s home and marries her. The rest of the story is all about what happens when he discovers that she has a terminal illness.

What is special in this film?
Story of the film is simple. Emotions are real and genuine. The haunting theme music is great. Ali and Ryan’s performances are awesome. John Marley and Ray Milland are perfect as fathers of the heroine and the hero respectively. Direction of the film is good. This film possesses a rare charm missing from similar films released in this era.

Tailpiece: A typical tearjerker that Indians can be liked as well. This film is based on a novel by Erich Segal. This film was nominated for the Oscars in seven categories. Patton won most of the Oscars that year.

Inspirations:

1. Johnny: This film inspired the basic plot of Pawan Kalyan’s film Johnny.

2. Telephone scene in Kushi: When Pawan Kalyan says I love you over the phone to somebody called Geeta, Bhumika Chawla hears it and feels jealous. When she asks him, he says that, that is his mother Geeta and he calls her by her name. In ‘Love Story’, the heroine says I love you to Phil over phone. The hero gets jealous and she clarifies that Phil is her father and she calls him by name.

3. Chand Chupa from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam: The theme music of Love story is haunting. The Chand Chupa song from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam uses this theme music effectively.
