Synopsis:

Godfrey (William Powell) is poor and lives in a city dump in Manhattan. Irene Bullock (Carole Lombard) spots him and wants him to participate in the scavenger hunt. Impressed by him, she appoints him as the family butler in her house. The house of Bullocks has four family members. The rest of the story is all about how Godfrey helps them all by resisting advances from Irene.

What is special in this film?
This film still makes you laugh with its screwball comedy though made 70 years ago. It is a clean comedy film from the depression era in America showing the real world at that time and showing the divide between the rich and the poor.

The scenes I liked

1. The opening credits scene where the names of the cast/crew glitters.
2. Scavenger hunt concept
3. The dialogue – “The only difference between a derelict and a man is a job”
4. The way Irene laughs uncontrollably.
5. Carlo mimicking a chimpanzee.

Tailpiece:
This film though nominated for seven Oscars, did not win any.

Inspiration:
Godfrey character in My Man Godfrey reminds us of NTR’s character in Gundamma Katha film.
