Synopsis:
Willie (Robert Francis) graduates from US Naval Academy and his first assignment is in Caine warship during the World War II. Queeg (Humphrey Bogart) is the new captain of the ship. He is a meticulous captain who ensures discipline on the board. Tom Keefer (Fred MacMurray) observes that Queeg suffers from paranoia. Maryk (Van Johnson) also believes that the captain is mentally unstable. During a stormy night, the captain Queeg gives paranoiac instructions. Maryk – the next in command – relieves Queeg of his duties and he takes over as captain. The Navy department investigates if Queeg was really mentally unstable or if a criminal act of mutiny took place on the ship. The rest of the story is all about whether Willie and Maryk face court martial or not.

What I liked in the film?
Humphrey Bogart came up with a magnificent performance of an old disciplinarian who suffers from mental illness. This film has lots of powerful actors and good performances.

What I did not like in the film?
The romantic plot in the film acts as a speed breaker to the tempo of narration.

The scenes I liked?

1. The way Queeg nudges steel balls whenever he is tensed (the best scene being the one when he faces query in the court).
2. The strawberries episode which shows how some discipline addicts go to such extent to prove their points over silly issues.
3. The scene in which Queeg says “There's the right way, the wrong way, the Navy way, and my way”
4. The outburst of attorney in the party and the way he praises Queeg.

Tailpiece: This film is adapted from a novel. But it is shot so realistically that we would end up thinking that it is based on a real incident.
