The Departed (2006) Review

The Departed (2006)

Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson & Mark Wahlberg
Director: Martin Scorsese
Rating: fullstarfullstarfullstarfullstar-
Enetertainment Quotient: entertainment 50%
Genre: Crime
Theme: Undercover

Synopsis:
Frank (Jack Nicholson) is the local don in Boston. Queenan (Martin Sheen) is the head cop. Frank sends Sullivan (Matt Demon) undercover to the police department to leak information from the cops. Queenan sends Costigan (Leonardo DeCaprio) undercover into Frank’s mafia gang. The rest of the story is all about how these two youngsters uncover everything.

How is the film?
There is some suspense throughout the film and the ploys by cops and mafia are pretty cool. This film is an adaptation of the critically acclaimed Korean film Mou gaan dou (Infernal Affairs). Jack Nicholson brings a lot of perspective to the mafia don character. The way he performs in ‘smelling the rat’ scene with DeCaprio is awesome. The character of DeCaprio ends up winning our sympathy. On the flipside, the running time of the film is little too lengthy. The climax of the film is good where it is shows social justice.

Tailpiece:
I find Matt Demon and Leonardo DeCaprio to be similar in looks. And interestingly in the narration Martin Scorsese has used inter cuts on both these guys excellently. I find it to be the class of Scorsese. And in the end, he shows the real rat on the screen to literally tell that this film is about rats (traitors).
