Synopsis:
This film is adapted from a novel titled ‘Darlington’s House’. This story is set in the 1930’s in England. The story is narrated in flashback format where Stevens (Anthony Hopkins) drives his car to meet Miss Kenton (Emma Thomson) after a gap of 15 years. While driving, he recollects his relationship as a butler with head maid in ‘Darlington’s House’. His master is a pro-Nazi American Mr. Lewis (Christopher Reeve).

Steven wants do perform his duties of butler in an idealistic way. He dedicates his entire life to serve his masters in the capacity of butler by foregoing all his personal comforts and feelings. He never thinks of himself, but always strives for perfection in his profession. At this point of time, his head maid Kenton gets close to him and falls in love with him. However, he shields all his emotions for her and reacts nonchalantly to her.

What is special about this film?
‘Remains of the day’ is about unspoken love. This film is a genuine presentation of a duty-minded gentleman. Anthony Hopkins gives one of his best performances in the role of a dedicated butler. His expressions are subtle and demeanor is demure. Emma Thomson is great. Hugh Grant plays a small character in this film. You can also see great costumes and interiors in the film produced by Merchant-Ivory production. Art direction is excellent. James Ivory’s direction is brilliant. Overall, this beautiful film deals with a sad love story.

Tailpiece: The character of Anthony Hopkins should be a model for those who are passionate about their work. If you watch this film, you will end up being a fan of Anthony Hopkins (provided you are not already one with ‘Silence of the lambs' and 'Hannibal').
