Synopsis:
An anti-terrorist summit is happening in Mexico where all the heads of countries unite to pass a resolution against terror. The US president is assassinated as soon as he takes over the mike. The rest of the story is all about uncovering the assassination plot and finding out the culprits.
What I liked in the film?
The narration technique of having eight versions of the same incident is good. Though it is repetitive, the director made sure that we find something out new in each version. Since the movie runtime is 90 minutes, each version is approximately run for 10 minutes.
What I did not like in the film?
Though the movie starts in an impressive way, the climax of the film turn out to be a routine fare. We expect better thrilling ending than this.
The people who assissined the president of USA on stage and blasted the entire place by killing 100’s people including children end up complicate things in the climax to save an innocent stranger girl.
Why Vintage Point not another Rashomon?
1. In Rashomon, each person gives an account of what he has seen. But in Vintage Point, the directors inserts more story than what that person has actually seen (showing scenes and episodes which the narrating person did not see).
2. In Rashomon, the suspense is intact till the end. But in Vantage point, you will know the culprit in the middle itself.
Tailpiece:
Even if you miss a couple of versions, you wont miss much in the film. It is like eight replays of the same video tape from different angle. And the tagline of the film claims ‘8 strangers and 8 points of view’. But the security guy (Dennis Quaid) and the president are not strangers to each other.
