Dr. Isak Borg (Victor Sjöström) gets an honorary award after working in medical field for 50 years. He is an isolated man with no attachments to his relatives. He takes a car journey to the venue which is several miles away. During his car journey, he goes through a catharsis and remembers about his old days and how he severed relationships. The rest of the story is all about how this detached old man yearns for love and affection by the time he ends the journey.
What I liked in the film?
The whole journey of the professor where he goes to several flashbacks and hallucinations is interesting. The actress who did the childhood love and the young girl travels along with profession is the same (Sara is the name of these two characters).
What I did not like in the film?
The narration is very slow and the theme is abstract.
The scenes I liked
1. The camaraderie between doctor and his house maid. When house maid becomes demanding, professor says that she is not his wife. She promptly replies that she thanks God every night for that.
2. The penultimate scene where Sara says good bye to professor and tells him how much she loves her. (It reminds professor of his childhood love).
Tailpiece:
This film is nominated for Oscars as one of the best foreign films. Wild Strawberries is considered as the classic masterpiece.
