Synopsis:
Jim Winters (Anthony LaPaglia) is a widower and a father of two sons. His elder son wants to leave their hometown and move to Florida. His younger son is a rebel with bad academic record at the school. A neighbor Molly (Allison Janney) moves in to their neighborhood. The rest of the movie is all about how Molly makes them to realize the need of belongingness among these three men who hardly communicate heart to heart.
What is special in this film?
Anthony LaPaglia’s performance as widower is intense. The director narrated the film with minimal dialogues. Cinematography is good.
What I disliked in the film?
The narration moves at a snail’s pace.
The scenes I liked
1. Father throwing out the mattresses of his both sons into the lawn, as they fail to keep up their promise of attending dinner at neighbor’s place.
2. Teacher offers an incentive of one-day holiday for answering a question correctly.
Tailpiece:
The film effectively shows how bad men can be at communicating their sensible feelings to others, especially when they are living in a house, without a woman, in many cases a mother. The film shows how a woman can facilitate smooth communication among the family members and with others too.
