Bujjigadu & SuperKings – Made in Chennai

27 May 2008

Having Chennai in their name doesn’t seem to have augured well both for the film 'Bujjigadu – Made in Chennai' and the IPL’s one of the most fancied teams – Chennai Superkings. The movie ‘Bujjigadu’ though has the stamp of Puri Jagannadh on the hero’s characterization had many loopholes in other departments and failed to live up to the expectations of the audience. Prabhas did a great job in the role of Bujjigadu and certainly makes his mark in the movie including the display of his six pack abs. Trisha too excelled in certain scenes like mocking at Prabhas after the cell phone call. The storyline has striking similarities to the movie ‘Manasantha Nuvve’ when it comes to childhood lovers waiting for each other and ‘Dhee’ for the thread of heroine’s brother protecting her from the rival gangs while taking help from the hero.

Puri’s trade mark comedy track for Ali doesn’t impress at all. MS Narayana too doesn’t evoke neither laughter nor sympathy from the audience in his drunkard father's role Of course Sunil’s comedy does strike the audience's funny bones. The Songs on the screen sounded well but very few words could be understood. Editing and picturization of ‘Manasantha Chala Chala’ song is simply superb and perhaps for the first time such experimentation was done in a Telugu movie. Dances are okay. Though Puri is known for oversimplification of things – some points like how a guy who lives in Vizag and spends 12 yrs in Chennai and chases for his childhood sweet heart in Hyderabad speaks with Godavari accent is beyond comprehension and so is the reason for why he chooses to run away from home. Also showing mountains in the background and saying the place is London while Trisha talks on her cell phone when majority of audience knows that there are no mountains in London as shown in those scenes is height of oversimplification. Usage of foul language which has touched newer heights from ‘Era… Pora.. Endey.. Vosey…’ to using words like ‘verri munda’ and ‘munda kaana..’ etc., makes audience slightly uneasy. The fights are over extended and too many of them made the movie a little bit dragged.

Mohan Babu is totally wasted as there was no punch in the dialogues written for him as one would have expected and his characterization too turned out to be weak. However the scenes between Mohan Babu and Prabhas are very well conceived with the best being the interval fighting scene. Prabhas’s look and body language and his timing in delivering the one-liners throughout the movie not only impresses his fans but also Puri’s admirers.

Overall the movie is worth watching once just for Prabhas and you won’t be disappointed at all if you ignore the fact the director of this movie and ‘Pokiri’ is one and the same.

Moving over to IPL – made in Chennai, i.e. Chennai Superkings, their two consecutive losses last week make their match against Deccan Chargers very crucial and they just can not relax even against the bottom ranked team . For a team which has the highest paid IPL Player in its ranks in the form of MS Dhoni and who started their campaign with four consecutive wins fighting for a win against the weakest team to survive in the league sounds truly shocking , but even more shocking outcome with their victory would be the elimination of the most expensive team of the League - Mumbai Indians.
