February: An eventful Month

Telugu Cinema has come a long way from where it started it's humble journey. The first film, Bhakta Prahlada, was given to us in 1931. Time has passed by. New technologies enriched the way we look at the cinema and the way they make films. From a black and white cinema to Eastman color. Then scope and later 70mm. The journey into the new world of technology never stopped.

In 1994 India witnessed the first ever direct invasion of sound and graphics technology in India with the release of 'Jurassic Park' on a massive scale. Our film makers made quick adjustments to incorporate all the necessary oomph into their films. 'Ammoru' set the ball rolling for special effects films. 'Master' made way for the digital sound era(DTS) of Telugu cinema. We never know where we are going to land up.

Theaters are getting closed down. People are reluctant to come out of their houses to watch a film in theaters as their favorite boobtube offers them a la carte of movies to choose from. Channel wars are going on. All the released films are seen on TV even before they could complete 100 days.

New producers are entering the industry and skyrocketing the remuneration's of heroes, there by increasing the production cost. At the end of the day only few people succeed and others leave the industry.

In the year of 1999 there were 147 releases. 65 straight films and 82 dubbed films. If we consider 65 films 6 of them turned out to be super hits. Ten films made it to the range of hit/average. Remaining 49 films incurred heavy losses to producers/distributors/exhibitors there by converting the status of Industry to slump. If we consider the dubbed films, only four films made money and remaining 78 films have bitten the dust. Some films could not recover the print/poster cost. The year of 1999 has a success percentage of 13.6 (20 out of 147).

Idlebrain.Com welcomes Telugu Film Industry into a new millennium and wishes a great time with good hit films.
