Vanaja Banagiri (editor) said, "I had been in this writing business for the past 20 years. There is no English magazine dedicated to South Cinema. There is a general belief outside India that Indian films mean Bollywood though South Indian cinema contribute to more than 50% of Indian films. South Scope magazine has best production values."
Allu Sirish (CEO) said, "I am born and brought up in Chennai. And all four South Indian movie industries used to operate from Chennai at that time. It was fun to see movies and celebrities of south cinema in Chennai. Over a period of time, each and every industry migrated to their capitals. It is my effort to bridge the gap between these four south Indian film industries by using South Scope as a platform. We intend to bring these four film industries under one roof. South Scope is going to be the voice of South Indian cinema to the outside world. When I did my degree in Mumbai, lots of my north friends evinced interest about South Indian movies. But there is no magazine in English to serve this purpose. It is also one of the reasons to start South Scope magazine."
Launch
Southscope, India’s south film magazine was launched in Chennai by superstars- Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Mammooty, Mohanlal, Venkatesh & Sharath Kumar. Cine stalwarts of this stature coming together on one platform was hitherto unheard of. The launch was a special part of Padmasri Kamal Haasan’s celebration that marked his completion of 50years in Indian cinema. In addition to the superstars, the event was choc-o-bloc with the who’s who of south film industry. Illayaraja, K. Balachander, A R Rehman, Sankhar, Prabhudeva, Madhavan, S P Balasubramanyam, Harisharan, Sundaram, Radhika, Tabu, Silambarasan, Dhanush, to name a few.
Why Southscope?
Record-breaking box office collections or mega budgets, avant technology or the world’s best technicians are an integral integral part of the South Indian film industry. Of the Close to 1000 Indian movies that hit Indian and overseas screens in a year, 50 or more are from the South of Indian alone. Of gross filmed entertainment revenues, 50% is garnered by the South Indian film industry. 60% of Country’s cinema houses have a South Indian address. And here’s the clincher – only 22% of India’s population live in South India! In spite of contributing nearly 70% of India’s annual and home to 6700 of the 12000 cinema screens in the country, the South Indian film industry is under recognized. The four industries had many things in common, including a common birthplace in Chennai in the 1920s. So far, there in hasan’t been a single coffee table book or academic Journal that captures the stardom, magic, art and commerce of the Southern industries. With facts such as these, we felt that it was high time a magazine dedicated to south cinema existed. That’s what gave birth to the idea of starting a magazine to bring the South Indian films and their audiences closer to each other in addition being the brand ambassador of South Indian cinema to the outside world.
