Superstar Mahesh Babu on Thursday, taking to his X page, dropped the trailer of Gandhi Tatha Chettu, fronted by ace director Sukumar’s daughter Sukriti Veni Bandreddi (in her debut), and it looks to be a small film with a big heart.

A little over two minutes, the trailer opens with Gandhi (Sukriti) who is a kind and soft teenage girl and someone who doesn’t hesitate to disclose her friends name to the teacher when they are cheating during the examination. She is her grandfather’s (Ananda Chakrapani) pet and has grown up listening to his tales of ethics. Some of her activities daily have her friends feel that she is losing her mind day by day, with some even wondering how she’ll survive after growing up. The story takes a turn when a businessman (Rag Mayur) enters Gandhi’s village and promises to develop a factory for the benefit of villagers if they are ready to give up their land. He is offering Rs 5 lakh per acre. As the villagers en masse give away their land, Gandhi’s grandfather is worried that if he gives away his land, the businessman might chop off the tree that exists in his farm land. “If you chop the tree, I will lose my life,” he declares. Gandhi gives a word to her grandfather that she will protect it come hell or high water. She takes a Gandhian route to achieve this.

In conclusion, the trailer promises to paint the inspiring and touching journey of a teenager who goes to great lengths to protect a tree that is dear to her grandfather, while the director highlights themes of harmony, ecological balance and coexistence. As it approaches its end, the trailer tugs at your heartstrings with its emotional core. There’s a certain innocence and honesty in Sukriti’s portrayal of Gandhi and the rural Telangana setting is captured in its authentic form.

Produced by Naveen Yerneni, Ravi Shankar and Sesha Sindu Rao under Mythri Movie Makers, Sukumar Writings and Gopi Talkies, the film, written and directed by first-timer Padmavathi Malladi, opens in cinemas on January 24. Ree has composed the music.
