Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan marks his final outing in cinema before dedicating himself full-time to politics. Directed by H. Vinoth, the film stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Mamitha Baiju in pivotal roles. Produced on a grand scale by Venkat K. Narayana under the prestigious KVN Productions banner, the highly anticipated film is set for a worldwide release on July 23.

On this monumental occasion, producer Venkat K. Narayana interacted with the media and shared several insights about the film. Here are the excerpts from the interview.

Q: You faced a few hurdles regarding the film's release. Did you anticipate them?
A: We did anticipate some challenges. Vijay himself told us earlier, "This is my last film. After this, I will be entering politics full-time, so there could be a few issues." However, we only expected some hurdles related to the theatrical release. What we eventually faced was far beyond our imagination. Life always takes unexpected turns. A film that was initially planned for a January release is now arriving on July 23. Looking at the bigger picture, we never expected to encounter so many issues simultaneously, including release delays, piracy, and court cases. On the positive side, the film is now releasing after Vijay became the Chief Minister, which has only heightened the excitement among fans.

Q: You have achieved great success in business. What inspired you to enter the film industry?
A: I have loved movies since childhood. Cinema teaches us many things that academic books cannot. Songs, lyrics, and stories have a profound impact on our lives. In the recently released film Peddi, there is a dialogue: "Why live such a long life if you're going to live it the same way?" I really loved that line. Powerful ideas like these can be effectively conveyed to society through cinema. Even after handling many responsibilities in business, entering the film industry was always on my bucket list. I embarked on this journey to work with the people who have inspired me throughout my life.

Q: You entered the film industry during the COVID-19 pandemic, right?
A: COVID affected millions of people. During that period, we launched the Feed My City initiative through KVN. We provided meals to daily wage workers and those who had lost their livelihoods. We continued the initiative for nearly 45 days and served lakhs of people. It remains one of the most satisfying experiences of our lives.

The film industry was also hit very hard. Many people associated with the industry lived around us, and after speaking with them, we realized how many films had come to a halt and how many people had lost their jobs. That inspired us to contribute to the industry. We first entered film financing, then distribution. We distributed S.S. Rajamouli's RRR in Karnataka. I have immense respect for Rajamouli garu and his family. From there, we stepped into film production.

Q: How did your journey with Thalapathy Vijay begin?
A: This is my first Tamil film. I was already acquainted with Vijay's manager, and we had discussions during the time of Leo. I learned that Vijay was planning another film after GOAT. I have always admired his films, so I expressed my interest through his manager. The project was finalized in just one meeting. That's how my journey with Vijay began.

Q: Whose idea was it to take Bhagavanth Kesari as an inspiration for Jana Nayagan?
A: Vijay really liked Bhagavanth Kesari, and I liked it as well. We only took inspiration from two scenes and built the rest of the story in a completely different world. We even discussed it with Anil Ravipudi. Our intention was to present a fresh story to the audience. We were also very honest in cutting the trailer. We didn't hide the fact that two scenes were inspired by Bhagavanth Kesari. While the trailer may give a certain impression, the film unfolds in a completely new world with a fresh conflict. Apart from the basic thread of a young girl joining the army, everything else is entirely original. If audiences watch the film with an open mind, they will experience a fresh and emotionally powerful story.

Q: You faced several challenges with the censor certification. What is your reaction to the entire process?
A: The film carries a strong message about empowering the girl child and bringing positive social change. Bhagavanth Kesari even won a National Award. It was disappointing that our film was initially awarded a U/A certificate and was later changed to an A certificate. Since this is a film meant to inspire young audiences, we hoped families could watch it together so that the message would reach more people. However, we respect the Censor Board's decision, which was made from their perspective.

Q: Jana Nayagan was delayed significantly. What challenges did you face as a producer?
A: When a film of this magnitude misses its planned release date, the challenges for a producer multiply. The delay affects not just the producer but the entire ecosystem associated with the film. Still, we believe that when the destination is great, the journey can sometimes be difficult. Great victories never come easily, and God places the crown only after the battle.

Q: This is Vijay's first film releasing after he became the Chief Minister. Do you think the expectations are difficult to meet?
A: Absolutely. Watching Vijay on the big screen after he assumed office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu is a very special moment for audiences and fans. It is a rare opportunity for this generation to watch a sitting Chief Minister's film in theatres. It will undoubtedly be a memorable occasion. Vijay is an extremely disciplined person. Working with him has been a wonderful experience. He completes his work on time and remains highly committed. Collaborating with him has brought me immense joy.

Q: What kind of experience do you think this film will offer Vijay's fans?
A: The film will undoubtedly give Vijay's fans a memorable cinematic experience. We are releasing it worldwide across approximately 7,000 to 8,000 screens. We have designed it as a fitting tribute to Vijay's remarkable cinematic legacy.

Q: Is there a possibility of working with Vijay again?
A: At present, Vijay's complete focus is on public service. He is fully dedicated to improving people's lives, so I don't think there is any possibility of him returning to films anytime soon. However, if such an opportunity ever arises, I would certainly love to collaborate with him again. We meet many people in life, but only a few leave a lasting impression. Vijay is one of those personalities. He has also entrusted me with an important responsibility, and I am striving to fulfill it with sincerity and honesty.

Q: Could you tell us about the film you are doing with Chiranjeevi?
A: I have been a huge admirer of Chiranjeevi since childhood. His films and his journey have always inspired me. The songs and messages in his movies motivated me greatly in life. That is why I decided long ago that if I ever produced a Telugu film, my first one should be with Chiranjeevi. I am delighted that this dream has finally come true. The film is shaping up exceptionally well.

ఈ సినిమా రిలీజ్ విషయంలో కొన్ని ఇబ్బందులు ఎదుర్కొన్నారు కదా? మీరు ముందుగానే ఊహించారా?
ముందుగానే కొన్ని ఇబ్బందులు రావొచ్చని మేము అనుకున్నాం. విజయ్ గారు కూడా, "ఇది నా చివరి సినిమా. దీని తర్వాత పూర్తిగా రాజకీయాల్లోకి వెళ్తున్నాను. అందువల్ల కొన్ని సమస్యలు వచ్చే అవకాశం ఉంది" అని ముందే చెప్పారు. అయితే రిలీజ్ సమయంలో థియేటర్స్ విషయంలో కొన్ని అడ్డంకులు రావచ్చని మాత్రమే భావించాం. కానీ మేము ఊహించని కొన్ని పరిస్థితులు వచ్చాయి. జీవితం ఎప్పుడూ ఊహించని మలుపులు తీసుకుంటుంది. జనవరిలో విడుదల కావాల్సిన సినిమా ఇప్పుడు జులై 23కి వచ్చింది. మొత్తంగా చూస్తే రిలీజ్, పైరసీ, కోర్టు వ్యవహారాలు... ఇలా ఇన్ని సమస్యలు ఎదురవుతాయని మేము అసలు ఊహించలేదు. కాకపొతే ఇందులో మంచిని కూడా చూడాలంటే విజయ్ గారు ముఖ్యమంత్రి అయిన తర్వాత సినిమా వస్తోంది. అది అభిమానులకు మరింత ఉత్సాహం ఇస్తుంది.

మీరు బిజినెస్‌లో ఎంతో ఉన్నత స్థాయికి వెళ్లారు.సినిమాల్లోకి రావాలనే ఆలోచన ఎలా వచ్చింది?
నాకు చిన్నప్పటి నుంచే సినిమాలంటే చాలా ఇష్టం. అకాడమిక్ పుస్తకాల్లో దొరకని ఎన్నో గొప్ప విషయాలు సినిమాల్లో ఉంటాయి. పాటలు, లిరిక్స్, కథలు... ఇవన్నీ మన జీవితంపై ఎంతో ప్రభావం చూపుతాయి. ఇటీవల విడుదలైన పెద్ది సినిమాలో "ఒకేలాగే బతికేయడానికి ఇంత పెద్ద జన్మ ఎందుకు?" అనే డైలాగ్ ఉంది. ఆ డైలాగ్ నాకు చాలా నచ్చింది. ఇలాంటి గొప్ప ఆలోచనలను సమాజానికి సినిమాల ద్వారానే బలంగా చెప్పొచ్చు. బిజినెస్‌లో ఎన్నో బాధ్యతలు నిర్వహించిన తర్వాత కూడా నా బకెట్ లిస్ట్‌లో సినిమా రంగంలోకి రావడం ఒక లక్ష్యంగా పెట్టుకున్నాను. నాకు స్ఫూర్తిని ఇచ్చన అందరితో పని చేయాలని ఈ ప్రయాణం చేస్తున్నాను,

కోవిడ్ సమయంలో సినీ పరిశ్రమలో అడుగుపెట్టారు కదా
-కోవిడ్ చాలా మంది ఇంపాక్ట్ అయ్యారు. ఆ సమయంలో మేము కేవీఎన్ ద్వారా'ఫీడ్ మై సిటీ' కార్యక్రమాన్ని ప్రారంభించాం. కోవిడ్ కారణంగా ఉపాధి కోల్పోయినవారికి, రోజువారీ కూలీలకు భోజనం అందించాం. సుమారు 45 రోజుల పాటు ఈ కార్యక్రమాన్ని కొనసాగించి లక్షలాది మందికి ఆహారం అందించగలిగాం. ఆ సేవా కార్యక్రమం మా జీవితంలో ఎంతో సంతృప్తిని ఇచ్చిన అనుభవంగా నిలిచిపోయింది.

కోవిడ్ సమయంలో సినిమా పరిశ్రమ కూడా తీవ్రంగా నష్టపోయింది. మా చుట్టుపక్కల కూడా సినీ పరిశ్రమకు చెందిన వాళ్లు ఉండేవారు. వాళ్లతో మాట్లాడినప్పుడు ఎన్ని సినిమాలు ఆగిపోయాయో, ఎంతమంది ఉపాధి కోల్పోయారో తెలిసింది. అప్పుడే మనం కూడా ఈ పరిశ్రమకు ఏదైనా చేయాలనే ఆలోచన వచ్చింది. ముందుగా ఫిల్మ్ ఫైనాన్స్, ఆ తర్వాత డిస్ట్రిబ్యూషన్‌లోకి అడుగుపెట్టాం. రాజమౌళి గారి 'ఆర్‌ఆర్‌ఆర్' సినిమాను కర్ణాటకలో డిస్ట్రిబ్యూట్ చేశాం. రాజమౌళి గారు, వారి కుటుంబం అంటే నాకు ఎంతో గౌరవం. డిస్ట్రిబ్యూషన్‌ తర్వాత ప్రొడక్షన్‌లోకి కూడా అడుగుపెట్టాం.

విజయ్ గారితో మీ ప్రయాణం ఎలా మొదలైంది?
ఇది నా తొలి తమిళ సినిమా. విజయ్ గారి మేనేజర్‌తో నాకు ముందే పరిచయం ఉంది. 'లియో' సినిమా సమయంలో మా మధ్య చర్చలు జరిగాయి. గోట్ తర్వాత విజయ్ గారు మరో సినిమా చేయబోతున్నారని తెలిసింది. ఆయన సినిమాలు నాకు చాలా ఇష్టం. అందుకే ఆయన మేనేజర్‌కు నా ఆసక్తిని చెప్పాను. ఒక్క మీటింగ్‌లోనే ఈ సినిమా ఓకే అయింది. అలా విజయ్ గారితో నా ప్రయాణం ప్రారంభమైంది.

'భగవంత్ కేసరి' సినిమాను 'జన నాయకుడు'కు ఇన్‌స్పిరేషన్‌గా తీసుకోవాలనే ఆలోచన ఎవరిది?
'భగవంత్ కేసరి' సినిమా విజయ్ గారికి చాలా నచ్చింది. నాకు కూడా చాలా ఇష్టం. అందులోని రెండు సన్నివేశాలను మాత్రమే ఇన్‌స్పిరేషన్‌గా తీసుకుని, మిగతా కథ మొత్తం కొత్త ప్రపంచంలో సాగేలా రూపొందించాం. ఈ విషయంపై అనిల్ గారితో కూడా మాట్లాడాం. పూర్తిగా కొత్త సబ్జెక్ట్‌ను ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు తీసుకురావాలనే ఉద్దేశంతో పని చేశాం. ట్రైలర్‌ను కూడా చాలా నిజాయితీగా కట్ చేశాం. 'భగవంత్ కేసరి'లోని రెండు సన్నివేశాల ప్రభావం ఉందనే విషయాన్ని దాచలేదు. అయితే ట్రైలర్ చూసి ఒక అభిప్రాయం ఏర్పడొచ్చు. కానీ సినిమా చూస్తే పూర్తిగా కొత్త ప్రపంచం, కొత్త కాన్ఫ్లిక్ట్ కనిపిస్తుంది. అమ్మాయిని ఆర్మీలో జాయిన్ చేయాలనే థ్రెడ్ తప్పితే మిగతాదంతా పూర్తిగా కొత్త కథ. ఓపెన్ మైండ్‌తో చూస్తే సినిమా కొత్త అనుభూతిని ఇస్తుంది. ఎమోషనల్‌గా కూడా ప్రేక్షకులతో బలంగా కనెక్ట్ అవుతుంది.

సెన్సార్ విషయంలో చాలా ఇబ్బందులు వచ్చాయి కదా? బాధపడ్డారా?
ఇందులో గర్ల్ చైల్డ్ ఎంపవర్‌మెంట్, సమాజంలో మార్పు తీసుకురావాలనే సందేశం ఉంది. భగవంత్ కేసరికి జాతీయ అవార్డు కూడా అందుకుంది. అలాంటి స్ఫూర్తితో వస్తున్న ఈ సినిమాకు మొదట మా సినిమాకు U/A సర్టిఫికెట్ ఇచ్చి, తర్వాత A సర్టిఫికెట్ ఇవ్వడం కొంచెం బాధ కలిగించింది. ఎందుకంటే ఈ సినిమా యువతను ప్రేరేపించేలా, ఆలోచింపజేసేలా ఉంటుంది. ఎక్కువ మంది కుటుంబాలతో కలిసి చూస్తే ఆ సందేశం మరింత మందికి చేరేది. అయితే సెన్సార్ బోర్డు తమ అభిప్రాయం ప్రకారం నిర్ణయం తీసుకుంది.

ఈ సినిమా రిలీజ్ చాలా ఆలస్యమైంది కదా? నిర్మాతగా ఎలాంటి ఇబ్బందులు ఎదుర్కొన్నారు?
-ఇంత పెద్ద సినిమా అనుకున్న సమయానికి విడుదల కాకపోతే నిర్మాతగా ఎలాంటి ఇబ్బందులు వస్తాయో అవన్నీ సహజంగా వస్తాయి. నిర్మాత ఒక్కరిపైనే కాదు... మొత్తం సినిమా ఎకోసిస్టమ్‌పై దీని ప్రభావం పడుతుంది.

ముఖ్యమంత్రి అయిన తర్వాత విజయ్ గారి నుంచి వస్తున్న తొలి సినిమా ఇది. అంచనాలు ఇంకా పెరుగుతాయని భావిస్తున్నారా?
ఖచ్చితంగా. తమిళనాడు ముఖ్యమంత్రిగా బాధ్యతలు చేపట్టిన తర్వాత విజయ్ గారి సినిమా థియేటర్లలో విడుదల కావడం ప్రేక్షకులకు, అభిమానులకు ఒక ప్రత్యేకమైన అనుభూతి. ఈ తరం ప్రేక్షకులకు ఒక ముఖ్యమంత్రి నటించిన సినిమాను థియేటర్‌లో చూసే అవకాశం రావడం చాలా అరుదు. కచ్చితంగా ఇది ప్రతి ఒక్కరికీ మెమొరబుల్ మూమెంట్ అవుతుంది.

ముఖ్యమంత్రి అయిన తర్వాత విజయ్ గారి నుంచి వస్తున్న తొలి సినిమా ఇది. అంచనాలు ఇంకా పెరుగుతాయని భావిస్తున్నారా?
ఖచ్చితంగా. తమిళనాడు ముఖ్యమంత్రిగా బాధ్యతలు చేపట్టిన తర్వాత విజయ్ గారి సినిమా థియేటర్లలో విడుదల కావడం ప్రేక్షకులకు, అభిమానులకు ఒక ప్రత్యేకమైన అనుభూతి. ఈ తరం ప్రేక్షకులకు ఒక ముఖ్యమంత్రి నటించిన సినిమాను థియేటర్‌లో చూసే అవకాశం రావడం చాలా అరుదు. కచ్చితంగా ఇది ప్రతి ఒక్కరికీ మెమొరబుల్ మూమెంట్ అవుతుంది.

ఈ సినిమా విజయ్ గారి అభిమానులకు ఎలాంటి అనుభూతిని ఇస్తుందని భావిస్తున్నారు?
ఈ సినిమా విజయ్ గారి అభిమానులకు కచ్చితంగా ఒక మెమొరబుల్ ఎక్స్‌పీరియన్స్ ఇస్తుంది. ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా సుమారు 7,000 నుంచి 8,000 స్క్రీన్స్లో సినిమాను విడుదల చేస్తున్నాం. విజయ్ గారి సినీ ప్రయాణానికి ఓ ట్రిబ్యూట్‌లా ఉండేలా ప్లాన్ చేశాం.

విజయ్ గారితో మళ్లీ సినిమా చేసే అవకాశం ఉందా?
ప్రస్తుతం విజయ్ గారి దృష్టంతా ప్రజా సేవపైనే ఉంది. ప్రజల జీవితాలను మెరుగుపరచడానికి ఆయన పూర్తిస్థాయిలో కష్టపడుతున్నారు. ఈ పరిస్థితుల్లో ఆయన మళ్లీ సినిమాలు చేసే అవకాశం ఉంటుందని నేను అనుకోవడం లేదు. ఒకవేళ భవిష్యత్తులో అలాంటి అవకాశం వస్తే మాత్రం తప్పకుండా ఆయనతో మరో సినిమా చేయాలని ఉంటుంది.

-చాలా మందిని జీవితంలో కలుస్తాం. కానీ కొందరి వ్యక్తిత్వం మాత్రం ఎప్పటికీ గుర్తుండిపోతుంది. విజయ్ గారు అలాంటి వ్యక్తి.

-ఆయన నాకు ఒక ముఖ్యమైన బాధ్యత కూడా అప్పగించారు. నా అనుభవాన్ని ఉపయోగించి ఆ బాధ్యతను నిజాయితీగా నిర్వర్తించడానికి ప్రయత్నిస్తున్నాను.

చిరంజీవి గారితో చేస్తున్న సినిమా గురించి?
నాకు చిన్నప్పటి నుంచి చిరంజీవి గారంటే చాలా అభిమానం. ఆయన సినిమాలు, ఆయన ప్రయాణం నాకు స్ఫూర్తి. ముఖ్యంగా ఆయన సినిమాల్లోని పాటలు, సందేశాలు జీవితంలో ముందుకు వెళ్లడానికి ఎంతో ప్రేరణ ఇచ్చాయి. అందుకే నేను తెలుగులో సినిమా చేస్తే మొదట చిరంజీవి గారితోనే చేయాలని ముందే నిర్ణయించుకున్నాను. ఇప్పుడు ఆయనతో సినిమా చేసే అవకాశం రావడం చాలా ఆనందంగా ఉంది. సినిమా చాలా అద్భుతంగా వస్తోంది.
