'Kalki 2898 AD' is a sci-fi epic magnum opus directed by visionary filmmaker Nag Ashwin. Starring India's biggest superstars Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles, the film was produced ambitiously by Ashwini Dutt under his Vyjayanthi Movies banner. 'Kalki 2898 AD' had a grand release on 27th June and entertained audiences from all over the world. The movie received epic blockbuster success and is running successfully with house fulls. Celebrating the success of the film, Director Nag Ashwin shared many insights about ’Kalki 2898 AD' in a grand media interaction at the Kalki sets in Shankarapally.

In a media interaction, Director Nag Ashwin said...Thanks on behalf of our team, Vyjayanthi Movies, for encouraging everyone to watch the movie and for giving such a great success. I think this is a whole industry success. A door has been opened for many production houses, actors, writers, and upcoming directors. Kalki is like a reference point for those who write such science fiction stories. Many people have been congratulating the movie since its release. Kalki is said to have given a good cinematic experience.

Media Q&A session:

How did the idea of adapting Kalki from the incidents in Mahabharat come about?
Mayabazar is what we remember from Telugu cinema. Mayabazar is an adaptation of Mahabharata. Those particular incidents are not found anywhere in the Mahabharata. That is creative fiction. The inspiration came from there.

What is the target of the Shambhala people?
Complex has removed a balance in the world, Shambhala's target is to bring a balance in the world again.

When did you come up with the idea of doing it in two parts? When will part 2 arrive?
First, I wanted to make this story in just one movie. After completing the shooting of some schedules, it felt like a challenge to tell such a big story in one part. Then, we decided to make it in two parts. We shot for part 2 for 20 days. There is so much more to do, so much action, so much backstory, and so many new worlds to see. All of them should be created now.

Doesn't it feel risky to take on such a heavy subject for the third film, and direct the biggest stars like Amitabh, Kamal, and Prabhas?
Our producers took a risk. If I have to spend this much, they will spend more than that. And, Big actors like Amitabh, Kamal, Prabhas, Deepika were hired with the intention of doing justice to the story and characters.

In part 1 there were opinions that Prabhas's screen time was less. How will it be in part 2?
Kalki has massive subject matter, world-building, and lots of characters. All these should be shown. Now the world-building is done. The audience was introduced to that world. The roles, powers, and motives of the characters are known. Prabhas will have more screen presence in part 2.

Prabhas was revealed as Karna in the climax. Does Part 2 show him in a negative or positive?
Karna's character is positive. Wherever you see in India, everyone loves Karna’s character. Justice should be done to the character of his story.

When Kalki is seen for the second time, many things related to Karna become new. It feels like a different film when you watch it a second time. This is a movie worth watching for a second time.

Do you get the impression that Kalki is designed to appeal more to children?
There is an intention that children will learn about the Mahabharata and our original heroes. We have wonderful stories. That is why the film was made light-hearted rather than too dark.

What was the most challenging part of the journey in this film?
To keep a movie for four and a half years, you have to have judgment, it is difficult to have the same judgment when a scene written in 2019 is being edited in 2024. It requires a different skill set. In the case of this film, it was difficult.

Is there any idea of making the complete Mahabharata as a film series in the future?
As of Now, there is no such idea.

The movie has a lot of cameos, right? The reason for all the cameos?
I love the cameos. When we suddenly see a star, the excitement builds.

In this, almost everyone who worked in Vyjayanthi movies in recent period has appeared. Except Nani and Naveen Polishetty?
It couldn’t happen in this part. But, I will definitely put them wherever I get a chance in part 2 (laughs).

You've narrated Sri Sri's poetry with Kamal Haasan's character.
Those lines looked apt for the situation and Yaskin's philosophy seemed to be the same. Nothing much to say about Kamal Haasan. If I say half, he will take it to more than a hundred percent.

About Vyjayanthi movies?
Not only in the 50-year journey of Vyjayanthi movies, but Kalki is one of the most expensive films in the history of Telugu cinema. I feel very grateful that this film has become a great success and our investment has come full circle.

What kind of bond was formed with Prabhas in this journey?
Prabhas was very excited when I told this story. He believed in the project and anchored from the beginning saying we are making a massive movie.

How hard did you work to design the sets? Your favourite place in this world?
Our production team worked very hard. My favourite place in this is Shambhala Steps. I used to sit there. The sunrise and the sunset look very good from there.

Won’t you make films with someone else other than Ashwini Dutt?
It’s not happening, as I’m taking four to five years to complete a film (laughs).

How did you convince Rajamouli and RGV?
This is purely a tribute to Rajamouli and RGV. They are the Directors who changed the industry. Actually, RGV asked why me. I said sir, you should be in Kali Yuga (laughs).

Bujji has been designed well, right? Have you taken the patent rights?
Automobile engineering was done simultaneously to design Bujji. We have taken the patent rights. A temporary license was also given.

Which hero is coming as Kalki? What is your favourite character in this?
He is still in the stomach, isn’t he? There is still time for that and My favourite is Karna.

భారతం, భాగవతంలోని ఇన్సిడెంట్స్ లో కల్కి లో అడాప్ట్ చేయాలనే ఆలోచన ఎలా వచ్చింది?
- తెలుగు సినిమా అంటే మనకి గుర్తుకొచ్చేది మాయాబజార్. మాయాబజార్ మహాబారతనికి ఒక అడాప్ట్టేషన్. ఆ పర్టిక్యులర్ ఇన్సిడెంట్స్ మహాభారతంలో ఎక్కడా లేదు. అదొక క్రియేటివ్ ఫిక్షన్. అక్కడి నుంచే ఇన్స్పిరేషన్ వచ్చింది.

ఇందులో శంభల ప్రజల టార్గెట్ ఏమిటి ?
-కాంప్లెక్స్, వరల్డ్ లో ఒక బ్యాలెన్స్ తీసేసింది, శంభల టార్గెట్ మళ్ళీ వరల్డ్ లో ఒక బ్యాలెన్స్ తీసుకురావడం.

రెండు పార్ట్స్ గా చేయాలనే ఆలోచన ఎప్పుడు వచ్చింది ? పార్ట్ 2 కోసం ఎంత టైం వెయిట్ చేయాలి ?
-ముందుగా ఒక్క సినిమాగానే ఈ కథను తెరకెక్కించాలనుకున్నా. కొన్ని షెడ్యూల్స్ షూటింగ్ పూర్తయిన తర్వాత ఇంత పెద్ద స్టోరీని ఒక్క భాగంలో చెప్పడం ఛాలెంజ్ అనిపించింది. అప్పుడే పార్ట్‌లుగా చూపించాలని నిర్ణయించుకున్నా. పార్ట్‌ 2కి సంబంధించిన 20 రోజులు షూట్ చేశాం. ఇంకా చాలా చేయాలి, చాలా యాక్షన్, బ్యాక్ స్టోరీస్, న్యూ వరల్డ్స్ ఇలా చూడటానికి చాలా వున్నాయి. అవన్నీ ఇప్పుడు క్రియేట్ చేయాలి.

మూడో సినిమాకే ఇంత పెద్ద హెవీ సబ్జెక్ట్ తీసుకోవడం రిస్క్ అనిపించలేదా? అమితాబ్, కమల్, ప్రభాస్ లాంటి బిగ్గెస్ట్ స్టార్ తీసుకోవడం గురించి ?
-మా ప్రోడుసర్స్ రిస్క్ తీసుకున్నారు. నేను ఇంత ఖర్చు చేయాలంటే.. దానికంటే ఎక్కువ ఖర్చు పెడతారు.
-కథ, పాత్రలకు న్యాయం చేయలనే ఉద్దేశంతోనే అమితాబ్, కమల్, ప్రభాస్, దీపిక లాంటి పెద్ద యాక్టర్స్ ని తీసుకోవడం జరిగింది.

పార్ట్ 1 లో ప్రభాస్ గారి స్క్రీన్ టైం తక్కువుందనే అభిప్రాయాలు వచ్చాయి.. పార్ట్ 2 లో ఎలా వుండబోతుంది ?
- కల్కి మ్యాసీవ్ సబ్జెక్ట్, వరల్డ్ బిల్డింగ్, చాలా క్యారెక్టర్స్ వుంటాయి. ఇవన్నీ చూపించాలి. ఇప్పుడు వరల్డ్ బిల్డింగ్ అయిపొయింది. ఆడియన్స్ కి ఆ వరల్డ్ పరిచయమైయింది. ఎవరి పాత్రలు, పవర్స్, మోటివ్స్ ఏమిటో తెలిసింది. ఇకపై ఇంకా ఫన్ గా వుంటుంది.

ప్రభాస్ గారిని ని క్లైమాస్క్ లో కర్ణుడిగా రివిల్ చేశారు. పార్ట్ 2 నెగిటివ్ గా చూపిస్తారా లేదా పాజిటివ్ గానా ?
-కర్ణుడి పాత్ర పాజిటివ్ గానే వుంటుంది. ఇండియాలో ఎక్కడ చూసిన ఆ క్యారెక్టర్ ని లవ్ చేస్తారు. ఆయన కథకి క్యారెక్టర్ కి జస్టిస్ చేయాలనే వుంటుంది.

కల్కిని రెండో సారి చూస్తునప్పుడు కర్ణుడికి సంబధించిన చాలా విషయాలు కొత్తగా కనిపిస్తాయి. సెకండ్ టైం చూసినప్పుడు డిఫరెంట్ ఫిల్మ్ అనిపిస్తుంది. సెకండ్ టైం వర్త్ వాచ్ మూవీ ఇది.

కల్కి పిల్లల్ని ఎక్కువగా ఆకట్టుకునేలా రూపొందించారనే భావన కలుగుతుంది ?
-పిల్లలు మహాభారతం, మన ఒరిజినల్ హీరోస్ కి సంబధించిన విషయాలు తెలుసుకుంటారనే ఒక ఉద్దేశం అయితే వుంది. మనకి అద్భుతమైన స్టొరీలు వున్నాయి. అందుకే సినిమాని మరీ డార్క్ కాకుండా లైట్ హార్ట్టెడ్ గా తీయడం జరిగింది.

ఈ సినిమాలో ప్రయాణంలో మీకు ఛాలెంజ్ గా అనిపించిన అంశం ఏమిటి ?
- ఒక సినిమాని నాలుగున్నరేళ్ళు దాక పట్టుకొని ఉండాలంటే జడ్జ్మెంట్ వుండాలి, 2019లో రాసిన సీన్ 2024 లో ఎడిట్ చేసుస్తున్నపుడు అదే జడ్జ్మెంట్ పెట్టుకోవడం కష్టమైన విషయం. దీనికి డిఫరెంట్ స్కిల్ సెట్ కావాలి. ఈ సినిమా విషయంలో ఇది కష్టమనిపించింది.

భవిష్యత్ లో సంపూర్ణంగా మహాభారతాన్ని తీసే ఆలోచన ఉందా ?
-ఇప్పుడు అలాంటి ఐడియా ఎం లేదు.

ఇందులో చాలా క్యామియోలు వున్నాయి కదా ? అన్ని క్యామియోలు పెట్టడానికి కారణం ?
-క్యామియోలు నాకు ఇష్టమేమో. సడన్ గా మనకి తెలిసి ఒక స్టార్ ని చూసినప్పుడు ఒక ఎక్సయిమెంట్ వస్తుంది.

ఇందులో ఇటివల కాలంలో వైజయంతి మూవీస్ లో పని చేసిన అందరూ దాదాపుగా కనిపించారు. కానీ నాని,నవీన్ పోలిశెట్టి లేకపోవడానికి కారణం?
-నాని, నవీన్ ఈ పార్ట్ లో కుదరలేదు. డెఫినెట్ గా ఎక్కడ ఛాన్స్ దొరికితే అక్కడ పెట్టేస్తాను(నవ్వుతూ)

కమల్ హసన్ గారి పాత్రతో శ్రీశ్రీ కవిత్వం చెప్పించారు కదా.. దాని గురించి ?
- ఆ లైన్స్ కరెక్ట్ గా సెట్ అయ్యాయి. యస్కిన్ ఫిలాసఫీ కూడా అదే అనిపించింది. కమల్ హసన్ గురించి చెప్పాల్సిన పని లేదు. నేను సగం చెప్తే ఆయన వందశాతంకు పైగా తీసుకెల్తారు.

వైజయంతీ మూవీస్ గురించి ?
-వైజయంతీ మూవీస్ 50 ఏళ్ల జర్నీలోనే కాదు.. తెలుగు సినిమా హిస్టరీలోనే ఇది వన్ అఫ్ ది మోస్ట్ ఎక్స్ పెన్స్సీవ్ ఫిల్మ్. ఈ సినిమా గొప్ప సక్సెస్ సాధించి మా ఇన్వెస్ట్ మెంట్ ఫుల్ గా రావడం అనేది చాలా థాంక్ ఫుల్ గా భావిస్తున్నాను.

ఈ జర్నీలో ప్రభాస్ గారితో ఎలాంటి బంధం ఏర్పడింది ?
- ప్రభాస్ గారికి ఈ కథ చెప్పినప్పుడు చాలా ఎక్సయిట్ అయ్యారు. ప్రాజెక్ట్ ని చాలా బిలివ్ చేశారు. మీరు హ్యుజ్, మ్యాసీవ్ మూవీ తీసుకున్నారని బిగినింగ్ నుంచి ఎంకరేజ్ చేశారు.

సెట్స్ ని తీర్చిదిద్దడానికి ఎంతలా కష్టపడ్డారు ? ఈ వరల్డ్ లో మీకు ఇష్టమైన ప్లేస్ ?
-మా ప్రొడక్షన్ టీం చాలా కష్టపడింది. ఇందులో నాకు ఇష్టమైన ప్లేస్ శంభల స్టెప్స్. అక్కడే కూర్చునే వాడిని. అక్కడ సైన్ రైజ్ సన్ సెట్ చాలా బావుంటుంది.

మీరు అశ్వినీదత్ గారికి తప్పితే మరొకరికి సినిమా చేయరా ?
-కుదరడం లేదండీ. ఒకొక్క సినిమాకి నాలుగైదేళ్ళు పడుతోంది(నవ్వుతూ)

రాజమౌళి, ఆర్జీవి గారిని ఎలా ఒప్పించారు ?
-రాజమౌళి, ఆర్జీవి గారు ఫ్యూర్లీ ఎ ట్రీబ్యుట్. ఇండస్ట్రీని చేంజ్ చేసిన డైరెక్టర్స్. ఆర్జీవి గారు నేను ఎందుకు ? అని అడిగారు. కలియుగంలో మీరు ఉంటారని చెప్పాను (నవ్వుతూ).

బుజ్జిని బాగా డిజైన్ చేశారు కదా.. పేటెంట్ రైట్స్ తీసుకున్నారా ?
-బుజ్జిని డిజైన్ చేయడానికి ఏకంగా అటోముబైల్ ఇంజనీరింగే చేశాం. పేటెంట్ రైట్స్ తీసుకున్నాం. టెంపరరీ లైసెన్స్ కూడా ఇచ్చారు.

కల్కిగా ఏ హీరో రాబోతున్నారు ? ఇందులో మీ ఫేవరేట్ క్యారెక్టర్ ఏమిటి ?
-ఇంకా పొట్టలోనే వున్నారు కదా. ఇంకా దానికి సమయం వుంది. నా ఫేవరేట్ కర్ణుడు.
