Director Trinadha Rao Nakkina courted controversy on Sunday when his sexist remark against actress Anshu at the teaser launch of his film, Mazaka, went viral.

He had said, “We would go to Manmadhudu movie just to see her. She was drop-dead gorgeous back in the day. When the same actress was in front of me during Mazaka shooting, I wondered whether I was dreaming. She has lost a little weight but I asked her to eat more and put on weight, saying that her present form is not enough for Telugu audiences and sizes need to be bigger. She has improved a bit. She will improve further.”

His statement received immediate backlash from all quarters with many condemning it as disrespectful and distasteful. The director on Monday apologized for his actions. “I understood that my comment at the teaser launch of Mazaka pained many women. It was made in jest to make the attendance laugh; it wasn’t made deliberately. Yet it’s still a mistake and I wholeheartedly apologize to women. Please forgive me with a big heart. My home has women too. I’m also offering an apology to Anshu garu as well,” he said.

Anshu, who shot into limelight in the aughts for her turns in films like Manmadhudu and Raghavendra, is making a comeback into Telugu cinema with Mazaka, starring Sundeep Kishan. She is paired opposite Rao Ramesh in the flick slotted for a release on February 21.

Meanwhile, actress Anshu steps in to support director Trinadha Rao, describing him as a wonderful person and urging the media to let the matter rest.
