Presently juggling between the sets of Gandeevadhari Arjuna and his untitled aviation thriller with Sony Pictures International Productions, where he plays a fighter pilot with the Indian Air Force, Varun Tej has committed to another project, idlebrain.com has learnt exclusively. According to a source, it will be directed by Karuna Kumar of the acclaimed Palasa 1978 fame, while Vyra Entertainments, the new production house that is bankrolling Nani and Mrunal Thakur’s next, will be producing it.

A source close to the development tells us, “The film, set on a massive scale, is a crime drama belonging to the ‘80s and ‘90s timeframe and centres on gambling. It will have a Visakhapatnam backdrop. Karuna Kumar has undertaken a mountain of research for the script, and has locked it. Varun is playing a role which he has never attempted prior. It’s a challenging part and he is excited about meeting the challenge head-on. He will be going for a makeover from head to toe for the part as the script requires him to be presented in a completely new light.”

The source adds that the makers are looking to take the film to floors later this August or September. “GV Prakash is in talks to compose music, while the team is in the process of zeroing in on other cast and technicians. They are looking at selecting mostly Telugu faces for the supporting roles,” the source maintains.

Right now, Varun is in Budapest, where he is filming for the final leg of Praveen Sattaru’s fast-paced action-thriller Gandeevadhari Arjuna. He will be back in Hyderabad by June-end.
