D Supriya - granddaughter of ANR, niece of Nagarjuna and sister of Sumanth – has been in the filed of film production for a long time and worked as an executive producer for many of the films produced by Annapurna studios in the recent past. She is the producer of recent Sankranthi release Pourudu (it collected 1 crore in 4 days). Idlebrain.com had a chitchat with Supriya about Pourudu film and her future projects. Here are the excerpts -
Why did you turn into production?
I started film production as an executive producer. I was novice and thought it was easy. But very soon I learnt that there is lot much involved in film making. My grandfather ANR and uncle Nagarjuna taught me nuances of film world.
What is the reason behind reviving SS Creations banner?
My father is not into active filmmaking any more. We made films like Shiva and Gayam. We have not made any film on SS Creations banner for the past 9 years. When we got the subject of Pourudu, I want to make it on SS Creations banner. Annapurna studios presented it..
How did Pourudu subject happen?
Raj came to us with a proper script and it was stuff in the script. He narrated it in 40 minutes. Sumanth was not satisfied with some films made by other producers. He felt that the production values and making standards did not complement some of his earlier scripts. Hence we decided to produce Pourudu ourselves.
If you notice the film, there is no wastage. Everything went well. When we sent the film for rerecording Mani Sharma commended that Pourudu is neat film (from making point of view and production values). The result of Pourudu has given me tremendous confidence.
Regarding Pourudu, i don't say that it is a great film. But it is a good commercial film.
Annapurna studios is always known for encouraging new talent?
Uncle Nagarjuna has tremendous respect for the technicians. He believes in technicians and never interferes. And it paid off. He gives lot of space to technicians. We never made any cheap/bad films on Annapurna studios or SS Creations banner. Of course, there could be flops, but never made any bad films.
Don't you think Pourudu title is inapt for this film?
Pourudu is surely a powerful name and it helped us in getting good opening. If I named it as Ajay, people would interpret as a soft film and we might not get the same kind of openings. We titled Pourudu because the hero is like a good citizen. People who expected a heroic and revolutionary citizen out the film might feel that the title is not apt.
How are the trade aspects of Pourudu?
Pourudu film was done in a reasonable budget with good production values. We released it with 86 prints and it collected a share of 1 crore in just four days. Thanks to the festival season! The B and C centers are getting overloads. It is a good mass film and I am very much satisfied with the commercial outcome.
Did you release the film on your own?
Yes. We released Pourudu on our own through Suresh distributors. I love to release all our films on my own if I could afford it. This way our responsibility does not end on the release day. It is nice to have stake in the results.
Don't you think Sumanth is under-exploited as an actor?
He has versatility in his work. But he is highly under utilized so far. There is no range in the scripts we get these days. Even then Sumanth always tried to balance his selection of script. After the success of Gowri, he could have done mass films. But he deliberately did soft flicks like Godavari and Madhumasam.
What is your next project?
We are hunting for new scripts. I don't mind producing films with other heroes, if the script demands.
When can we expect the debut of Naga Chaitanya?
He is currently enjoying the life. He is learning a lot about films. He is too young now. He will take a little time. We are not in a hurry now. He will be launched when we find the right script.
