Interview with Varun Sandesh
Date: February 24, 2011, Hyderabad
varun sandesh

Varun Sandesh got success too early and got upsets immediately. He did handle both success and failure reasonably well. He knows his limitations. He makes sure that his charm and unadulterated positive attitude are put forth whenever he meets somebody. Here is idlerbain.com’s exclusive interview with Varun Sandesh -

Tell us about your last movie ‘Yemaindi Ee Vela’?
My career was flagged off with two blockbusters which had great directors and big banners. My films after that didn’t click at box office though Evanaina Epudaina was commercially a safe project. Yemandi Ee Vela was like a breather in not-so-successful run of my recent movies. It was immensely liked and owned by teenagers and youngsters. However, people above 35 years of age couldn’t connect with the movie. It was teens who made Yemaindi Ee Vela a hit.

Didn’t you get any protest from girls staying in Amirpet hostels?
Nobody protested at me personally. However, the director was asked about the same in a few live programs on TV. Sampath Nandi justified it by saying that he has also shown nice girls in the hostels. In fact, he said that his sister was also staying at Amirpet hostel. The main female lead of the film makes a mistake and suffers the consequences.

Tell us how did KKC happen?
Producer Mahi came to Vizag where I was shooting for my film Happy Happyga. He narrated the storyline and we liked it. My father Vijay Saradhi Jeedigunta and Mahi were travelling to a temple near Srikakulam and a bad accident happened to the car. Mahi was badly hurt and my father was also hurt in that accident. The contract papers for that movie were soaked in their blood. I had to sign on that contract.

Ramana Salva is superb at narrating stories and he impressed us all with the script. It is an experimental genre film with no fights, no dances and no exposing. It’s a romantic drama with an emotional content and a gripping narration.

Tell us about your character in KKC?
I did the role of Venu in this movie. I could see varun Sandesh in all the characters I played so far. For the first time, you will see the character instead of me in KKC. I am really happy with my looks and subtle/mature performance. The character I play wants to connect to something in life.

It’s been 4 years since you entered film industry. How is the journey for you?
I started shooting for my debut film Happy Days in March 2007. I am very lucky to get Happy Days and Kotha Bangaru Lokam as my first two films. It’s been a roller-coaster ride for me. I had my fair share of disappointments at box office. KKC is my 8th film. I am 8 films young now.

Any special moments in your journey?

1. Meeting Rajnikant: Rajnikant was shooting for Robo in Ramoji Film City and I was shooting for Kurradu. Producer Gemini Kiran took me to Robo sets and introduced to Rajnikant. I was bowled over by the way he treated me. He is humble and down-to-earth despite being such a huge superstar.

2. Meeting ANR: I met ANR when he was felicitated in BITS-Pilani Hyderabad campus. It was a day I could never forget in my life. I spoke with him and listened to his thought-provoking speech. I completed my 12th class and entered films. I could connect with ANR when he said that he learnt a lot in real life than in school.

You are a romantic teen hero and you must be flocked by girls. Was there any weird incident?
People keep asking me the same question. But strangely I didn’t see any girl going gaga over me in real life. In a strange incident, I was given a 2-page love letter by a girl in Vizag when I attended Kalanjali event for which I am a brand ambassador. I didn’t respond to her letter.

I also found it crazy when a few boys told me that they added Sandesh to their names after watching Happy Days and Kotha Bangaru Lokam. It is still hard to digest that I am a hero now. It still feels like a dream. The most unforgettable person in my life is Sekhar Kammula who made it happen for me.

What do you do when you are not shooting?
I love playing PS3 whenever I get spare time. I watch movies. I liked Ala Modalaindi and LBW in the recent months. It’s nice to see small films getting good recognition.

What is your parameter for selecting films?
I have to like the story. If I like the story, I sign the film. Other things are secondary. I also try to pick films that are different from each other. My last movie Yemaindi Ee vela was liked by youth. KKC is for family crowds. My current film in Eeswar Reddy (Mee Sreyobhilashi fame) direction is a commercial entertainer. My next movie in Shravan’s direction is going to be a romantic entertainer.
