Dhoom 2
Boss

Wow, what to say about Dhoom 2, watching the 6:30 show on Thanksgiving night. I was one of the 1st people to see it. Normally, before every movie, I would check out audio reviews, movie stills, trailers, the whole works (and of course Jeevi’s review). By the time I was done “researching” the movie to see if it was worth watching, I could write ½ of the movie’s review without even watching it. But for something as big as D2, I had to see it on the first day of the release. Armed with only the usual speculation and assumptions of a big-budget film with star-studded actors, I watched the film and had the ride of my life.

You can tell we’re entering a new age in Indian cinema right from the start of the movie. With all the gadgets and gizmos, high-tech heists, and chases, this movie has more style than the new James Bond. It’s a visual treat to the eye for all you spy movie lovers out there.

Many people criticized the new songs saying they were average. I confess I was one of those people too. However, after watching the movie, each song fits in like a perfect puzzle that completes the movie. Hrithik Roshan’s dances in the opening song Dhoom Again and Dil Laga Na have given me newfound respect for his dancing skills.

Though D2 is the sequel to Dhoom, there is no comparison from the Mumbai-Goa cop/thief chase to the globe-trotting cat and mouse game of the sequel. All the actors themselves brought something to the table.

  • Abishek Bachan as the serious ACP Jai Dixit who is more interested in capturing and reforming thiefs than killing.
  • Bipasha Basu as the no-nonsense cop Shonali and Monali, her utterly opposite twin sister.
  • Uday Chopra as the lovable Ali with his hilarious jokes and never-ending antics.
  • Hrithik Roshan as the hip and uber cool Aryan AKA Mr. A: the world’s perfect thief
  • Ash in a very meaty role as Sunehri, Mr. A’s other half.

Where as the 1st movie concentrates on the cops, D2 casts the bad guys as the main role. We get to delve into their mindset as to why they steal and what satisfaction they get out of doing what they do best. The 1st half sets up the “Dhoom” mood with the trademarked soundtrack ever so present in a slower yet electrifying version. The 2nd half concentrates more on the love story of Sunehri and Mr. A. However, everything leads up to the mind-blowing climax.

Though D2 is a movie that one should go to see as pure entertainment (thought not family entertainment) it’s not an action movie with a brainless script. The story moves at a rapid pace but you can tell that thought was put into the writing of the script. It leaves you grasping to know about what happens next. And even if you do figure out what’s going to happen, the emphasis is all on the how and why?

One Final Note: Though I’ve never written about a movie, I thought it was worth a shot after watching Dhoom 2 ( it was probably all the adrenaline rush still in me). Anyways, what I’m trying to get at is that D2 is simply put, a really good movie to watch. Whether you watch it in theaters or on DVD, it’s something you shouldn’t miss.
