Story
Musa (Sanjay Dutt) is a mafia kingpin whose business is to identity people with enormous luck and conduct a human betting on them. Moosa’s aide Tamang (Danny Denzongpa) deals with the work of finding the right candidates who have lots of luck, but are financially desperate. Ram (Imran Khan) has amazing luck factor as well as loads of debts. Moosa starts off the game with around 10 people in South Africa and a few guys are killed in the rounds. The rest of the story is all about how Ram and his buddies survive the game.
Actors:
Sanjay Dutt is adequate as the kingpin who does business with luck. Imran Khan who was endearing in the Teen romantic flick Jaane Tu looked little out of place in an action flick like this. He is just ok. Kamal Hassan’s daughter Sruthi Hassan made her screen debut with this movie. The only emotion she is allowed to do in this movie is to sob. She is sleek. Danny is perfect. Mithun Chakraborty is ok. Bhojpuri superstar Ravi Kissen tried to imitate Manoj Bajpai rather than establishing his own signature. Chitrashi Rawat is impressive though she had a short role. Kota Srinivasa Rao is entertaining in a cameo.
Technical departments:
Story - screenplay - direction: The second half of the story reminds us of Intacto, The Condemned, Dead Or Alive etc. Story of the movie has an interesting premise. But there is something wrong with the way script is written. A story of this type should be presented in the format of dhoom2/ocean’s11 with slick visuals and breezily entertaining narration. But the director tried to make it like an old Hindi film where each of the game’s contestants has a sad story back home and it is shown as if they are scarifying everything to be a part of the game. Films of robbery/heist/game should be played the main leads for the fun/passion of doing it, not because they have a sick person staying back home expecting the guy to get money for medical treatment. When the fun element is missing in films of this genre, they become uninteresting and boring enterprises. Screenplay is shabby in the second half. Watching the second half of the movie is like watching a reality show on TV. Climax of the movie is extremely clichéd. Direction leaves a lot to be desired.
Other technical departments: Songs scored by Salim and Sulaiman are ok, but are like speed-breakers in the movie. Background music scored by Amar Mohale is adequate. Cinematography is good. The movie is made on a rich scale. Dialogues are average.
Analysis: First half of the film deals with selecting the people with luck and it’s adequate. The second half deals with the game of elimination and it is boring. The climax of the movie reminds us of Hindi films from Eastman Colour era. Though the movie’s story is interesting, the treatment given to it is not up to the mark. On a whole, Luck film will not likely to prove lucky for the people who worked for it.
