Interview with Amala Paul
Date: 15 January 2011, Hyderabad

Amala Paul made herself acquainted with Telugu audiences through a couple of quality dubbing films - Prema Khaidi (Maina) and Nanna (Daiva Thirumagal). Her first straight Telugu film Bejawada has failed to impress. Her latest film Love Failure is making waves in urbane areas. Amala Paul who donned the role of Parvathy has been getting great appreciation. Idlebrain.com has met Amala Paul for an exclusive interview. Here are the excerpts -

Tell us your background?
I was modelling and did over 15 endorsements including Eyetex Kajal and a few jewelry brands. The director of Maina saw my photos and came to my home. I had no intention of entering film industry at that point of time. He has convinced me with the script. It was released and became a huge hit. Later on I did Daiva Thirumagal (Nanna in Telugu), Vettai, Bejawada etc. I am currently doing my 3rd year in BA (Communicative English).

Tell us how Love Failure happened?
I have worked with the cinematographer Nirav Shah for a couple of films earlier. I also saw the short film a couple of years ago. When Nirav Shah approched me, I loved the script. It deals with the facts of love in a funny way. I am also of similar age.

How similar is Parvathi character compared to yourself?
It’s quite opposite. Parvathi is possessive and short-tempered. For her love is life. I am more of a friendly person who don’t get overtly emotional. Though I am not of Parvathi type, I had seen several such situations happened to my friends. I used to patch-up and pacify them. Hence I imitated some of my friends while doing Parvathy character.

How did you feel when you saw Parvathy on screen?
I was so much engrossed in movie that I was looking at the character Parvathi, not at actress Amala Paul. I will probably study my work as an actress when I watch Love Failure for the second time.

You are being compared with actresses like Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra for your looks/features?
It feels good to be compared with such accomplished actresses. It’s an honor. However, I would like to get my own identity over a period of time. I want to be remembered as a good actress even after 15 years.

Who are your favorite heroines?
Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit and a Korean actress Son Ye-jin. Sridevi and Madhuri defined the role of heroines and they ruled industry like heroes. I have a passion for dance like them and I am yet to show in my movies.

You were unglamorous in Maina and you didn’t have make up in Love Failure?
The director of Maina used to make me stand in sun light so that I get tanned. He used to say that he doesn’t want apple/tomato face and he wants a raw girl. He used to put some mud on my face to make me look de-glamorized.

I didn’t wear lip stick in Love Failure. I used light power on my face. If you notice my costumes, they are reused. In real life we reuse the costumes, like wise the director want it to be realistic in film as well. I maintained the same hairstyle through out the movie. The smallest details have been taken care of very well in Love Failure.

What are your future projects?
I have a couple of them in Tamil. I has signed a few films in Telugu as well. But, I prefer the producer to make that announcement.
