Review

Story
Padmabhushan (Suhas) is an aspiring writer in Vijayawada. But he doesn’t want his parents to know about his ambition. He secretly writes a book and publishes it by taking a huge loan. He tries to see reactions of people by giving them free copies incognito. But most of the people don't like his writing. At this juncture, a new book by his name becomes hugely popular. Somebody else has written a book with his name and photo. He became a celebrity overnight. His marriage is fixed to a relative (maradalu) who is deeply in love with his writing skills. Rest of the story is about who wrote that book using his name and what Padmabhushan has done with it.

Artists Performance

Suhas looks natural and is good while portraying the character of an aspiring writer who doesn’t have it in him. He is a confident actor. In certain scenes, his body language and dialogue delivery resembles that of Nani. He needs to cut on it for a long future. Tina Shilparaj is okay. Sai Gouri Priya is good in a small yet vital role. Rohini Molleti is excellent in the role of mom. Ashish Vidyardhi is decent. Gopiraju Ramana is fine as the heroine's father who is also a literature lover.

Story - screenplay - direction: Writing a review for this film is a tricky job. This film is all about the climax and we can’t reveal it. Hence we can’t discuss the story and the purpose of the film. The director has taken a sensible point and dealt it with sensitivity. However, the film falters on two issues. The first one is relatability. The habit of reading books (especially novels) ended in Telugu 2000 with the advent of the internet. That’s the reason why Yandamuri and Malladi have stopped writing fiction novels by then. Yandamuri started writing motivational books after that. Having book writing as the main theme and showing that people are crazy about Telugu novel writers might not strike chord with audiences. This issue can be sorted by setting it up as a period film in the 80's where Yandamuri peaked as a most celebrated novel writer for the youth at that time. The second one is the hero's characterisation. He looks weak and confused about his writing skills. You don’t have to make the hero’s character meek in order to make another character strong in the climax. Hero’s character can be strong and still the director should be able to convince the core point in the climax. The romance thread should have been more contemporary/fun-generating. Climax part of the film is heart touching. The director has chosen a climax subject that’s core to each and every household. Extremely relatable climax. It would have been a great film if the climax is supported by an organic writing for all characters that culminate into this climax.

Other departments: Songs and background music by Sekhar Chandra and Kalyan Nayak is fine. Cinematography by Venkat R Sakhamuri is okay. There is not much DI (colour grading) done to this movie. Dialogues are neat. Production design by Yellayya S is decent. Editing by Kodati Pavan Kalyan, Siddhartha Thatholu is okay. Production values by Chai Bisket Films and Lahari Films are fine.

Analysis: Writer Padmabhushan is an attempt to come up with a content-oriented movie. Climax of the film is extremely relatable. The theme used in the film is not relatable. Plus points of the film are climax and Suhas’s work. On the flipside, the first half should have been more interesting. A better writing in terms of strong characterisation to the hero would have done wonders as the hero character is the driving force for the movie till the climax. We need and wait and see how it works at the box office.
