Review

Story
PKR (Sarvadaman Benerjee) - CM of the state dies. Varma - a colleague (Murali Sharma), Jaidev - son-in-law (Satyadev) and Sathya - daughter (Nayanthara) are in the probable list of successor. But there is another one Brahma - an illegitimate son of PKR (Chiranjeevi). As everyone makes moves, Jaidev turns out to be the wily and dangerous among them. Brahma stays away from politics and is concerned about the well-being of his sister. Rest of the story is all about how Brahma sets things right when things go wrong.

Artists Performance

Chiranjeevi: It’s nice to see Chiranjeevi doing a content-driven and a slightly older role. No heroines. No dances. No comedy. This is an opportunity to show his prowess in underplaying and subtle acting. There are only 3 big action sequences and he has done extremely well. There are several scenes in the film where he has to convey with the power of eyes and he is just superb.

Others: Salman Khan did a cameo as a junior associate of Brahma character and he is chivalrous. Satyadev has established as a good actor with several films. He is superb as a conniving man with an ambition to become a CM. It’s no mean feat to stand against the megastar and stamp his authority. He did it extremely well. Nayanthara is good. Puri Jagan is natural as an honest and fiery vlogging journalist. People like him on the screen. Murali Sharma is highly convincing as a senior politician. Sunil has a meaty role and he is very good. Brahmaji got another good role and he is pretty good. Divi Vadthya played a vital role convincingly. Anasuya Bharadwaj suited the role of righteous TV channel employee. Samuthirakani and Sarvadaman Benerjee are fine. Prabhu Deva and Warina Hussain have done cameos in songs.

Technical departments

Story - screenplay - direction: This film is an official remake of Malayalam blockbuster Lucifer. Director Mohan Raja who is an expert at remakes has made sure that he changed a few scenes/threads in order to suit Telugu nativity. It’s a very difficult task to make Chiranjeevi do a character that doesn't even have one single comedy dialogue. Director Raja Mohan achieved that feat and convinced audiences with heroism which is elevated due to the magnetic screen presence of megastar and also with the help of situations and background score. Raja Mohan has succeeded in maintaining soul though he went fully commercial with the last 15 minutes of the film (item song, fight and end credits song). Editor Mohan produced a sister-sentiment film Hitler (a Malayalam remake again) with Chiranjeevi in 1997. His son Mohan Raja directed Chiranjeevi again after 25 years, which also happens to be a Malayalam remake and also has sister-sentiment. This movie is also about a brother protecting father’s legacy and taking care of his sister. Director has also given importance to all key characters (more than 10). Screenplay is interesting. The title Godfather is very apt as it has two shades to it and is justified in both shades.

Other departments: Cinematography by Nirav Shah is of top quality. SS Thaman’s music helped the film. All songs in the film are situational background songs. The Godfather title song BGM and Najabhaja songs elevated heroim in the film. Dialogues by Lakshmi Bhupala deserve special mention. They have so much depth, and are powerful. He should be getting more star films as a writer. Production design by Suresh Selvarajan is very good. Action sequences are impactfully choreographed. Editing is fine. Production values are good.

Analysis: It’s very difficult to remake a malayalam film without losing essence. Lucifer is the biggest hit of Malayalam film industry. Making it with Chiranjeevi is even more difficult as he is known for his comedy, entertainment and dances. Director Mohan Raja handled such a difficult task and made sure that it appeals to every section of audiences (including the people who have seen Lucifer). Chiranjeevi’s controlled performance is the main asset. He is assisted by a great cast and technically superior technicians. Thman music and Lakshmi Bhupal dialogues make a big impact. The last 15 minutes of the film has a commercial tone to it though the rest of the film has the texture of the original. On the whole, Godfather is a decent remake of Lucifer and Chiranjeevi excels in a role that demands only acting and grace from him. You may watch it!
