Krishna (Venkatesh) is a cop who has a lot of empathy for fellow beings. He falls in love with Saijala (Nayanthara) who is struggling to make ends meet for her family of 4 sisters. Her father is in exile as he is wanted by police for a murder. Krishna hides his identity as Sailaja hates police. Rest of the story is all about what went wrong with Sailaja’s father and how Krishna helps Sailaja to win over her.
Actors: Venkatesh looks dashing and stylish. His comedy timing and mass mannerisms entertain us. There is a scope for all-round performance in this character and Venky does it effortlessly. Nayanthara looks slim and performed well. Pruthvi entertains with comedy character of Bathai Babji in first half. Posani Krishna Murali entertains in second half. Brahmanandam is passable in a cameo. Sampath Raj is alright as a villain. Vennela Kishore has a limited role. Showkar Janaki did a role after a long gap.
Story - screenplay - direction: Story of the film is thin. Hero’s characterization is given a new flavor with the compassion/empathy angle. It suited the image of Venkatesh and helped the story to progress smoothly in the first half. Maruthi who has given a sweet film ‘Bhale Bhale Magadivoy’ which is treated consistently throughout the film has chosen to satisfy all cross-section of audiences with Babu Bangaram. Hence he played it to the galleries most of the time instead of choosing to go with the story and characterizations. Comedy works in bits and pieces. So are the mass elements.
Other departments: Music by Ghibran is in Venkatesh’s style. Two melodies are good (Mallela Vaanala and Raaka Raaka) on repeated listenings. Background music is adequate. Dialogues written by Darling Swamy are okay. Cinematography by Richard Prasad is nice. Fights are well-choreographed. Editing by Uddav is okay. Production values by Sithara Entertainments banner is good.
Analysis: Babu Bangaram is aimed at being an all-round entertainer where there is something for everybody. Hence the director has filled the film with entertainment threads with Pruthvi dominating first half and Posani doing his bit in second half. It’s high time for big heroes to stay away from subjects in which they make villains bakras in second half. In spite of formulaic treatment, Maruthi has generated enough laughs. On a whole, Babu Bangaram is a commercial entertainer with some box office potential.
