Story
Tillu (Siddu Jonnalagadda) is an upcoming small-time DJ in Hyderabad. He is full of attitude and local swag. He falls for a pub singer Radhika (Neha Shetty) at the first sight. Just when he gets very close to her, he realises that she is a femme fatale with some dangerous moves. By then, he is involved in a criminal activity. Rest of the story is all about how he gets himself out of an impossible situation.
Artists Performance
Siddu Jonalagadda has been a talented actor waiting to fly for a long time (11 years since LBW film). He had a couple of decent films Guntur Talkies and Krishna and his Leela in between. DJ Tillu is a film that brought him the much needed promotion and hype to him. He has done a fabulous job by creating a unique body language and dialogue delivery for this character. Being the dialogue writer and actor, his diction is perfect and is free-flowing along with expressions. It’s a memorable role for him. Neha Shetty is good and glamorous. The actor who did the role of the hero's father is hilarious with nice diction and dialogues. Prince Cecil is good as a pub owner. Brahmaji does well as a bad cop. Narra Srinivas plays a vital role. Kireeti Dammaraju has an interesting role that stays short in the film. Pragati looks good as a judge with an awkward behavior.
Technical departments
Story - screenplay - direction: It’s basically a crime thriller with a con element. Director Vimal Krishna has written an interesting premise and characters. He has set it up really well by the interval. However, he couldn’t follow it up with the 3rd act. The narration takes a beating from the moment the actor joins the hospital in the second half. When the writer writes such an endearing and innocent character with unique attributes, it’s extremely important to maintain consistency. But the characterization goes for a toss in the 3rd act. It’s not convincing enough. However, the fun in the film is enough to keep the audiences in good spirits.
Other departments: DJ Tillu title song scored and sung by Ram Miriyala is very good. Other songs are like speed breakers to the narration. Background music by Thaman is good. Cinematography by Sai Prakash Ummadisingu is fine. Dialogues (especially the ones written to the hero and hero’s father) are hilarious. Avinash Kolla’s production design is decent. I liked the makeover done to an old Mitsubishi car. Editing by Naveen Nooli is fine. Production values by Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas are very good.
Analysis: A film is successful when we fall in love with the characters of the film (especially the hero). The character of DJ Tillu makes you fall in love with the film. First half of the film is hilarious. Act 3 of the film doesn't click. If the hero character remains innocent, people accept him even if his actions are logicless (example: Jathi Rathnalu), but the moment the hero tries to be intelligent (against the basic premise of the character), the script should be flawless writing wise. But the writing is not good (intelligent) enough for the 3rd act. The concept of blackmailing a music director for Rs. 2 crores with gossip looks very lame. Nonetheless, Despite of an unengaging 3rd act, DJ Tillu is an entertainer and gives a good amount of fun with a unique characterization. I would recommend this film just for the characterization, dialogues of DJ Tillu character and the performance of Siddu Jonnalagadda.
