Review

Story
Vasu (Nani) is a short filmmaker who aspires to become a director. He falls in love with Keerthi (Krithi Shetty) while searching for the heroine for his short film. He later becomes a director and makes a hit film. Just when he is about to announce his entry into Bollywood with the same film, he is arrested by police for the violation of the copyright. His story is a copy of a Bengali novel written in 1970’s. Vasu is seen getting disturbed and having visions. When he visits a hypnotherapist, it's revealed that those visions belong to that of Shyam Singha Roy - a revolutionary author from the 1970's in West Bengal. Rest of the story is about the connection between Vasu and Shyam Singha Roy.

Artists Performance

Nani looks pretty casual while playing the role of the contemporary Vasu and is brillant while playing the role of Shyam Singha Roy. He has shown a sharp contrast between these two roles. His body language for the Bengali character is excellent. However, the voice modulation appeared almost the same for both characters. Sai Pallavi played her part as devdasi with a lot of intensity. She is superb in this author-backed role. Krithi Shetty didn’t have any scope for performance in this casual role. Madonna Sebastian played the role of a lawyer. She is good. Murali Sharma played the character of a high profile lawyer. Jisshu Sen Gupta is decent in a vital character. Rahul Ravindran is good as brother and he has three makeovers in this film, which are really good. Abhinav Gomatam is pretty entertaining as a friend of Vasu. Leela Samson is gracious as a hypnotist. Manish Wadhwa is intimidating as the priest of the temple.

Technical departments

Story - screenplay - direction: The basic story of the film is about rebirth. Rahul Sankrityan who has earlier directed Taxiwala comes up with another story that deals with something that's beyond science. Basic story written by Janga Satyadev is interesting. However the story development and screenplay should have been better. Entire first half deals with the character of Vasu - a short film director. The first twist of the film (arresting Vasu) is lame. Who does directly come and arrest a person on the charge of copyright infringement. There is a due process to follow before going to the extreme step of arresting a person on copyright infringement. And the director has chosen an easy way out by showing blood leaking from the ear as a portal to transport Vasu character to the world of Shyam Singha Roy. Part of the flashback episode of Shyam Singha Roy is handled better. The part of Shyam Singha Roy saving devdasi is effective. But there is no character arc for Shyam Singha Roy. Entire literary growth of the character is shown in the montages of one song. The director has also conveniently hidden all the photographs of Shyam Singha Roy for screenplay convenience. Most of the second half is filled with the Bengali flashback episode. No efforts are put in to intertwine the flashback episodes with the current happenings, which would have been a better screenplay. However, a couple of twists in the fag end of the film are interesting. The climax of the film resembles the old classic Mooga Manasulu film.

Other departments: Music given by Mickey J Meyer is decent. Both songs penned by Sirivennela garu have a great meaning and are shot well in the 2nd half of the film. Shyam Singha Roy's title track has a good momentum to it. Cinematography by Sanu John Varghese is very good. He has brought in authenticity with his work for the flashback episodes. Dialogues are neat. Production design by Avinash Kolla is genuine. Action choreography by Ravi Varma is ok. Editing by Naveen Nooli is alright. Production values by Niharika Entertainment banner are very good.

Analysis: Shyam Singha Roy is a rebirth story. The ideals and revolting attitude of Shyam Singha Roy’s character are good. First half has nothing much to offer. Certain parts of the second half are decent. However the screenplay of intertwining two characters into the narrative should have been penned properly. Both Nani and Sai Pallavi excel. They are a huge plus to the film. This film is neither good, nor bad. Just okayish. We need to wait and see how an average audience takes it.
