Story
Jai (Saif Ali Khan) and Meera (Deepika Padukone) are deeply in love in London. Being a career oriented girl Meera want to come to India to further her career at art restoration. Jai and Meera collectively decide that they can’t continue a relationship when they are physically in different continents. They decide to bid adieu to their relationship and part ways. Jai dates a local girl in London and Meera dates her boss in India. The rest of the story is all about how they realise that they are exclusively made for each other.

Actors:
Saif Ali Khan did two roles in the film. The first one is the confused youngster of current era and other one is as a lover in hot pursuit around 50 years back. He has shown fine variation between these two roles and rocks as an actor. Deepika Padukone is at home playing the role of the leading lady and her smile and expressions are cute. Fagun Thakrar has projected innocence and charm required for the role of Harleen. Rishi Kapoor is natural and effortless as Veer.

Technical departments:

Story - screenplay - direction: As the title suggest, this film shows a love story in the past and a love story at the present. It also showcases the gritty determination of lovers of the past and wavering attitude of lovers at the present. What makes the screenplay of the movie special is that the way two stories are juxtaposed and narrated in a lucid manner with no scope for any confusion. And narrating such a wafer-thin love story needs excellent narrative skills and the director Imtiaz Ali comes up with a fine narration. An aspect of this movie that reminds me of ‘When Harry Met Sally’ is the indecisiveness and lack of commitment that plays the main conflict point for the progression of the story.

Other technical departments: Music of the movie is excellent. Cinematography is flawless. Since it is a conversational film there is lot of importance on the dialogues and all the dialogues are witty and natural. The color tone of the movie is also pleasant. Editing is crisp. Production values are admirable.

Analysis: Love Aaj Kal is the movie that threatens to erase the line between Bollywood and world cinema. The movie runs on an interesting screenplay and fine conversations. The main conflict point in this movie is the non-committal nature of the lead pair. The moment they show commitment to each other, the movie gets over. Director Imtiaz Ali came up with an arresting narration to sustain interest throughout the movie. A film of this nature might not appeal to aam aadmi (mango people), but will definitely be liked by multiplex crowds. Love Aaj Kal is definitely worth a watch.
