Open letter about Happy Days music

For those who were eagerly awaiting another musical hit from Shekar Kammula after haunting melodies from Anand and Godavari, Happy Days music comes as a great disappointment. We understand the storyline is different, more of a youth-oriented story compared to earlier films of matured love, but what I didn’t understand was how he failed to get the music director compose soul-stirring music- Shekar Kammula’s trademark.

Mickey J Meyer is a young music director aspiring to make it big in the field of film music. True. He is also surely one among thousands of aspiring young Indian musicians greatly inspired by genius A R Rahman and that fact is quite evident in each and every song composed by him. The first three songs of the film have nothing new and these songs reminded me of the songs in Boys, Yuva for the similar kind of plug-ins widely used without any hesitation. The young music director should learn that audience memory is not short! Mickey must try to wriggle himself out of A R Rahman’s influence and try to make his signature tunes. For a person like him who passed out of Trinity College of Music, London this will not surely be a tough task. Young musicians worshiping great music directors like Ilayaraaja, ARR and others should try to set a path of their own, instead of blindly following the way they have shown.

However, in this era when music can be generated at the click of a mouse, sophisticated synthesizers flooding the market for all kinds of permutations and combinations to churn out music I wonder if we can ever get something that is new.

This also reminds me of maestro Ilayaraaja’s interview for Frontline in 1989. “To me music is nothing but fraud. The moment you play all seven notes music is completed. Go on repeating it in several permutations and combinations, it is nothing short of cheating.” Absolutely, music is fraudulent but do it in an intelligent way!
