Rana Daggubati has done four Telugu films and two Hindi films. Most of his Telugu films have been of experimental nature (Leader and Nenu Naa Rakshasi) that belong to rare genres. His 4th Telugu film Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum (KVJ) is also a rare genre (action adventure), but it’s a commercial genre. KVJ is releasing on 30 November. Here are the excerpts of an exclusive interview -

About KVJ
KVJ is a simple vengeance film with a new backdrop of Surabhi. It’s about a theater artist who was born in Surabhi family. He was reluctant to be an actor, but was forced by his grandfather Surabhi Subramanyam. The entire story is set in the backdrop of Bellary which is the birthplace of Surabhi theater in real. It used to be a greenbelt around 50 years back and now a dry land due to continuous mining.

Adventure is a big genre and films like Indiana Jones, Pathala Bhairavi and Bobbili Raja testify this fact. KVJ belongs to action adventure genre.

Most of the shoots do happen in controlled environment. But we made sure that KVJ was not shot in a controlled environment. We have shot in the dense forests of Palghar and Pollachi. We used the dry land behind Ramoji Film City to capture the rustiness of mining area. We had a huge exhibition set in Nanakramguda which was set to fire for the climax. We had burnt around 125 cylinders each night for 26 nights while shooting climax. The climax fight took us to shoot 26 nights at a stretch. We worked very hard and injuries happen very frequently while shooting for action adventure. I know of certain injuries Venkatesh carry today because of the mishaps during shoot of Bobbili Raja.

KVJ is also told in an entertaining way. There is comedy in form of Raghu Babu & Satyam Rajesh who are with hero throughout the film. Brahmanandam plays the role of a Kannada theater artist called Rangasthala Pandit. Posani Krishna Murali did the role of a taxi driver called Tippu Sultan. He represents the common man's cry.

About Krish
Krish is a honest director with a clarity of thought. This is the first big scale film for him. Except for me and Rana, all the technicians and actors are experienced and big. Krish told me a line for 5 minutes and developed into full-length script in 6 months.

Solo Telugu release
We always wanted a solo Telugu release for KVJ as it matters a lot and we finally managed to get it on 30 November. KVJ is releasing in 600-800 screens worldwide. The Tamil and Malayalam versions will be released soon at an appropriate time. KVJ is also releasing in numerous North Indian centers like Sholapur and Ahmedabad. In USA too, the film was sold for a fancy price and releasing in lot of screens.

Hits and flops
I am trying new films. My first film Leader was a rare genre (political) film and it became a hit. Nenu Naa Rakshasi film was supposed to be a dark film. If you look at the first half, it’s dark, But due to various factors, the makers had to change the tone of the movie in the second half. Naa Istam was the only film which I tried doing something routine. KVJ has a completely new backdrop. I might not get a script like KVJ in the future.

Why?
Because it has so many shades to it. I had a wishlist of characters to do when I was training in acting at Mumbai (an year before Leader debut). The list consisted of 107 characters which are taken from various films I have watched. Leader gave me the opportunity to play politician and Department gave me the opportunity of doing cop role. But, KVJ has given be a chance to perform 5 characters as I play the role of a theater artist. I am a huge fan of Abhimanyu and Ghatodgaja characters (sons of Pandavas). I am a huge fan of Dana Veera Sura Karna film and particularly fond of Duryodhana and Krishna roles played by legendary NTR. My favorite film of NTR is Pathala Bhairavi. We have a small play of Pathala Bhairavi in KVJ. I have also done Narasimhavataram which comes in the climax. SVR has done it in the past, but they used mask. I am happy to have played Narasimhavataram in KVJ. I had to look animalistic, hence I ate a lot and pumped iron for 3 months to get a huge masculine figure so that I could play Narasimhavataram. I am the most satisfied actor because of KVJ. Thanks to Krish’s versatility.

Future films
I am doing a guest role in Ajith’s Tamil film in the direction of Vishnu Vardhan. The shoot will happen in December for 10 days. Suresh Productions is going to produce a film in Selva Raghavan’s direction. It’s an action and soulful film with real human emotions (not the period film which was supposed to be made long back). The shoot will start in January 2013. I have a Bollywood gangster film on cards.
