Interview with Sravanthi Ravi Kishore
Date: September 23, 2009, Hyderabad
sravanthi ravi kishore

Sravanthi Ravi Kishore is a passionate producer who produced path breaking and trend setting movies like Ladies Tailer, Nuvve Kavali, Nuvvu Naku Nachav, Ready etc. His latest movie Ganesh is hitting the screens all over the world on 23 September. Idlebrain.com caught up with him for an exclusive interview just a day before the release. He looked pretty relaxed and told me that 'all you need is just a pen to sign on a few papers a day before the release. Everything else would be taken care of'. Such is his planning. Here are the excerpts -

Tell us about the latest blockbuster from your banner 'Ready'?
The response for Ready has been wonderful. It did exceedingly well in Overseas and Nizam. I should also admit that it didn't do so well in C centers. It collected around 22 crores of share. It is in addition to satellite rights and dubbing/remake rights. Ready is being remade in Kannada, Tamil and Hindi now. Around 1,00,000 people watched Ready in USA which was a sort of record for a Telugu movie at that time.

Tell us about Ganesh?
I was in dilemma while selecting story for this movie. I had an option to make a film that could also entertain C center crowds unlike Ready or I could go for a subject that appeals to the people who got entertained by Ready. We decided to cater to the crowds who loved Ready movie. I felt really fresh when Saravanan narrated me the basic story line. I know Ram's strengths as hero and this subject can exploit his strengths to the fullest. I personally think that Ganesh should do better than Ready. That is the reason why I am releasing Ganesh in USA on my own through KAD distributors.

What do you think are the strengths of Ram as an actor?
Ram has dialogue power. His dances encompass tremendous energy. He can do both romantic boy and angry young man characters with equal ease. He has intensity in eyes and very few Telugu heroes possess such an intensity. He is a director's hero and gives what director wants. And he is amazing with action sequences.

What is the story of Ganesh?
Ganesh is about a guy who does what he thinks is right without bothering the repercussions of that act. Ganesh is basically a love story narrated in an entertaining way. The backdrop of kids will add more fun to it. Freshness is the USP of Ganesh as 70% of the scenes in the film are fresh and new. Remaining 30% of the scenes might appear familiar.

Tell us about the director Saravanan?
Director Saravanan has lots of fresh thoughts. Since he is a new guy, I gave him experienced technicians. He is here to stay. I think he will make a mark in Telugu film industry like Karunakaran (Toli Prema) and Bhaskar (Bommarillu). He is also a humble and grounded boy.

Tell us about the music?
Micky J Meyer balanced melody and beat. I am little biased towards lyrics. For me the best song in the movie is 'Tanemando' song penned by Sirivennela. Penning of Ganesa song is also a challenging task. I loved the beat and lyrics (Telugu, Hindi and English) in Rajkumara song. Ram and RJ Sastri deserves credit for that song.

Tell us about the writer Abburi Ravi?
Abburi Ravi's contribution for this movie goes beyond writing. He did an experiment in the second half. Ravi Abburi studied the body language of Ram and worked his dialogues around it. You can also observe the variation in Ram's voice modulation in this movie.

How is it like working with so many kids?
It was fun. It took over 15 days to select so many kids through auditions. I made sure that all 26 kids are present in the movie. Eight of them went to vacations due to summer holidays. I stopped the shooting of their part and we waited till their return. I didn't want to see them disappointed because they missed a part of the shoot. They have done a brilliant job and they added freshness to the movie.

What is your gut feel of the movie?
Since I was involved since the birth of story idea, it is very difficult to judge the movie after watching the final print. My gut feel is that Ganesh is going to be one of the major successful films. I am waiting for the audiences to endorse it.

Will you continuing making films with only Ram as hero?
I would love to do all my films with Ram as hero. He is a wonderful actor. I listen to stories keeping Ram in mind. I want Ram to do films from other banners as well. I want him to come and tell me 'uncle, when are you doing my next film?' instead of me asking him to act in my movie.

Ram is having terrific and successful heroines in his movies?
Yes. Heroines of all his films (except Jagadam) are really glamorous and contributed well. Getting good heroine for Ram is difficult due to the age factor of Ram. We had to wait for Genelia for 3 months for Ready. We had to wait for Kajal Agarwal for three months for Ganesh movie.

Ram always wished to make his debut in Tamil?
I wanted to introduced him Tamil with the remake of Ready. I held the rights of that movie for six months. It didn't materialize. I want to launch him in Tamil next year.

You had been in the industry for 23 years. You have seen both highs and lows. What were your feelings when you were at the low phase of career?
I realized that I couldn't get the audiences pulse and I decided to update myself. I also learnt that movies should not be made as per our personal taste, we should keep audiences's preferences in mind while making a cinema. But I never made any film that I regret making.

There is an adage that 'love is blind'. I think that it applies to passion as well. 'Passion is blind'. When you are passionate about something, you go blind sometimes. I swallow the failures as bitter pills and go ahead with the next project. I always feel that it is sufficient if I have enough finance to produce the next movie.

Which movies are the most memorable ones produced by you?
Nuvvu Naaku Nachav followed by Nuvve Nuvve. I cherish my experience with Nuvve Kavali movie. That movie was watched by 3 crores of people in theaters. It went housefull on 100th day in three theaters of RTC crossroads where only songs of the movie were repeatedly screened.

What is your long-cherished dream as a producer?
I had been making films for family audiences so far and I am branded as a producer of family oriented movies. I love producing epics and racy action entertainer. After seeing Magadheera potential at box office, the ambition in me to go for bigger budget movies got fueled. I also would love to make racy action thrillers like Bourne Identity and Bourne Ultimatum with Ram as hero.
