Vaastu (Chaitanya Rao) suffers from Tourette Syndrome and lives with his grandfather (Brahmanandam). One day, he finds a cockroach in a cola bottle. His friend Lancham (Rag Mayur) is an unsuccessful lawyer. He figures out that they can make crores of rupees by filing a case in consumer court or by blackmailing. Jeevan’s (Jeevan) ambition to get elected as a corporator. He is insulted by the current corporator and he is waiting for his brother Naidu (Tharun Bhascker). At this juncture, both these guys are forced to work together to make money from the cola company. Rest of the story is all about how they achieved it.

Artists Performance

Tharun Bhascker Dhaassyam is impressive as a reformed man who spent 20 years in Jail. Chaitanya Rao is very good as an insecure youngster who suffers from Tourette syndrome. His antics make the character unique. Rag Mayur is natural and witty with his performance. Jeevan is good as a guy who is fixated with the corporator post. It’s a different character for Brahmanandam and he makes his presence felt. Vishnu Oi is superb in this film too (after MAD). The dialogues and situations written for him make his character work big time in the theater. Raghuram is funny, yet menacing at the same time as Shorts. Ravindra Vijay is good as cola company owner. The cameo by Getup Seenu is hilarious.

Story - screenplay - direction: Story of the film is simple. It’s the screenplay that makes it a little complicated and engaging. Writing of the story is filled with unconventional scenes and witty humour. The last half an hour part of the film is filled with unexpected scenes. The way characterisations written are unique. Tharun Bhascker made sure that he made the film the way he wanted without bothering about Telugu audiences' commercial meter. That’s the unique thing about this film. It takes time to get it as it’s away from the popular taste. But, this humour and movie will eventually find a place. The director has used sound (bluetooth earphones scene) and visuals (sharp-shooter looking at silk smitha poster) to create humor. The entire episode involving Get-up Seenu is enjoyable because of the way it was written (also shows how stunts are shot for films/ads). I also liked the way Naidu character (brave character) explains about the freedom to Vaastu (coward character) by saying freedom is not in the shirt pocket (money), but the one behind it (heart). I also loved the way Naidu describes the freedom dog enjoys compared to us human beings (I also think the same way for decades). The concept of Naidu getting attracted to doll looks odd at the beginning. But he justified it with a dialogue towards the end.

Other departments: Vivek Sagar’s music is a highlight in the film. His background music and background songs have helped to elevate scenes and propel the story narration. He has used western music (typically we see it in cowboy films) in many scenes in the film. Dialogues are very contemporary and hilarious. Loved the english dialogues written (especially Take Car & Surender episodes). Cinematography by AJ Aaron is very good. However, the bridge shootout scenes in the climax look artificial (may be due to sub-par graphics work). Art direction by Ashish Teja Pulala is good. Editing is fine. Production House should be applauded for backing such a different movie.

Analysis: Tharun Bhascker Daassyam is one of the very few directors of Telugu cinema who has immense command on filmmaking yet he keeps experimenting with genres and themes instead of consolidating himself as a commercial director. Keedaa Cola too is an example of a creative director going with his gut feel and trusting the audiences. Keedaa Cola is wacky, quirky and different. If you are educated and have a sense of humour, you would definitely find ample fun moments in the film along with a strong message about freedom. Among the characters, I loved the depth in Naidu’s character. On the whole, Keedaa Cola is a wacky entertainer that bewilders you at first and then you come to terms with the genre and quirkiness. Worth a watch!
