Baby (Lakshmi) is a 70 year old granny who stays with the family of her only son (Rao Ramesh). Despite her son being a professor she along with her friend Chanti (Rajendra Prasad) runs a canteen. When she goes to a fair and participates in a photo opportunity, she suddenly transforms into a 24 year young woman (Samantha). Rest of the story is all about what happens when granny goes missing and how she realises her unfulfilled dream while helping her grandson (Teja Sajja) to succeed.
Actors: Veteran actress Lakshmi has come up with another fabulous performance after Mithunam film. Samantha has done an exceptional work as a 70 year old granny trapped in a 24 year old body. She had to look funny and relevant with the body language and nuances of a granny. She pulls such a difficult task off with consummate ease. There are a few delicate scenes in the film in second half which requires finest performance of the actress in order to work and Samantha nailed them. Chinmayi’s dubbing is excellent. The second best character in the film is that of Rajendra Prasad’s. He is exceptionally good and this is his best performance in recent times. He has portrayed affection, pain and humor in right doses. It’s another challenging character for Rao Ramesh and he is perfect. He has done extremely well in a scene in the second half in which he explains about the greatness of elders in the family. Naga Shourya is very good in a guest role of a good Samaritan who falls for the younger version of Baby. Jagapathi Babu and Adivi Sesh did guest roles. Teja Sajja (child artist from Indra) has done well as grandson. Pragati, Sunayana and Urvashi are fine.
Story - screenplay - direction: Oh Baby is an official remake of South Korean film Miss Granny (2014). It’s a faithful remake with slight modifications. The film starts off in a sluggish manner and the first half of the film works in bits. It’s the second half that has meaty content. Nandini Reddy has handled emotional scenes in second half very well. The scenes leading to Baby getting ousted from the house are not convincingly written. The comedy/romance track between Samantha and Naga Shourya is good. Sentimental scenes in second half make us realise the importance and sacrifices of elders in families. Nandini Reddy has also succeeded in utilising the talent of her cast to full extent.
Other departments: Music by Mickey J Meyer is good. Naalo Maimarape and Aakasam lona songs that come in second half make an impact. Cinematography by Richard Prasad is nice. Dialogues by Lakshmi Bhupala are very good. He has written sentimental dialogues and comedy liners very well. Editing by Junaid Siddhiqui is fine. Production values by Suresh Productions, Guru Films, People Media Factory and Kross Pictures are good.
Analysis: Oh Baby has an okay first half and an emotionally charged second half. The story of the film focuses on the importance of elders in family and the unconditional love they shower on family members. It’s a universal subject. Plus points of the film are Samantha and other cast members, entertainment and emotions in second half. However, the emotion appears forced in first half and there are quite a few melodramatic scenes. On a whole, Oh Baby has something that connects to everybody. You may watch it.
