Nani is one of those boy-next-door kind with intense look and burning desire to prosper. He has made his debut with successful Astha Chemma and followed it with Ride, Snehituda and Bheemili. His latest rom-com Ala Modalaindi is going to release on 21 January. Here is Nani’s chitchat -
Tell us about how did your last movie Bheemili fare?
Bheemili had a decent run at box office and it connected well with B/C center crowds. I have got mixed feedback from the people around me. The bone of contention for this mixed feedback is the climax in which hero character dies. Some people loved the movie for that heart-touching climax. Some people felt that there is no justification/build-up for the death. As an actor I am very proud of Bheemili and it is the best movie in my career.
Tell us about Ala Modalaindi?
Nandini is a very good friend and I had known her for the past 4 years. She has penned a beautiful script for Ala Modalaindi. I am playing the character of Gowtam in this movie. This character is like me in real life. I just have to behave on the screen. There is no separate comedy in the movie, but Ala Modalaindi is a fun film. The fun emerges out of the situations. There are neither punch dialogues nor separate comedy tracks.
How is it like working with a lady director?
I think its there in our head. It doesn't matter if a film is directed by a lady or a gent. But Nandini is different. She is like a man when she is on sets and she has little patience. She is terrifying to the cast and crew members on sets. She is also good with action sequences as well.
You seem to be changing genres with each movie?
I don’t like to repeat my characters and characterizations in near future. I wouldn’t want to see me again in the similar role in another film. I had seem slums and have good idea about posh lifestyle as well. I have different perceptions about different characters and perform as per the requirements.
Your name came up in drugs allegations last year?
A particular news channel splashed my name along with other names. For them, it is just another name to go with the scrolling. But for me, it is my life and my career. I didn’t want to sit back and take all the false allegations on me. I went directly to that TV channel and offered myself to talk in their talk show. They alleged that my number was there in the phone book of the drug dealer. That is no proof. If somebody else’s phone book has our number, it doesn’t mean that we know them. I asked them to come up with a log of calls made from my number to that number or vice versa. I came out clean in that episode. That incident has improved my self-respect and made me a more confident individual.
what are the films you are doing now?
My Tamil movie ‘Veppam’ in Anjana Ali Khan as direction is all set to release in February 2011. I am doing Pilla Jamindar in Telugu. I will be doing a bilingual (Telugu/Tamil) soon. I am open for any kind of challenging role.
