My Movie - Love Failure
love failure

A negative sounding title, close to zero promotion, a relatively new star cast with no big names associated except for the lead actor who himself hasnt seen much success in the past 2 years, zero fights, no duets and a minimal budget. Sounds like a sure shot formula for failure? Yes, it's LOVE FAILURE!!The movie which manages to rise above all these supposed shortcomings and holds its own in this season of big releases and even bigger flops. It has the backing of a very strong storyline based on a short film that went viral over the internet over an year ago and the conviction of the producer and director who rooted for substance over glitz and glamour.

Coming to the story- it is something every person of gen-y can relate to. The beginning of a bond, ups and downs in a relationship. The issues between couples and their efforts to make things work out. The candy floss romance is a combination of moments beautifully captured by Nirav Shah's lens. There is effective use of animation, effects and music to highlight the crux of the story.

This is once in a long time that all the actors vie for attention and are equally good. The guys playing Arun's(Siddharth) buddies bring in the laughs and the senior artistes in the parents' characters are a welcome change. There is no melodrama or unnecessary violence.

One big appreciable episode is where Arun's friends suggest that he should drink to drown his depression and he answers saying "Already heart damage ayipoyindi. inka na kidney liver ni kuda damage cheyali anukovatledu"

Siddharth has managed to give up the sentimental climax fixation and the ending becomes fun to watch. He fits into the role of a confused and helpless college going boy with elan and grace.Amala Paul makes her mark as the damsel in distress ;). She uses minimal makeup and underplays her role. The chemistry between the lead pair is really cute.

Music by Thaman is in perfect sync with the mood and there are no jarring notes. Despite there being very few songs you dont actually miss them as you are totally engrossed in the story. The movie appears to drag towards the intermission but picks up pace in the second half. The director(Balaji Mohan) gives out the impression that he's taken out excerpts from the very famous book- 'Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus'. I personally felt that I have either spoken or atleast heard most of the dialogues being spoken at some point or the other of life.

My 3 favorite scenes in the movie in my order of preference-

  • The unending thought process of the girl in the chocolate room and the guy's mind buzzing with just one tune-- randaka randaka
  • The comparison of a girl's outburst to the bursting of a dam.
  • Arun's dialogue when he's contemplating over the love failure where he says..no one is at fault. It is just that I behaved like a guy and she behaved like a girl.

the idea of the director to show Arun directly talking to the audience and narrating his story to different people at intervals is unique. He never loses grip over the basic concept.

The 2.15 hrs just pass off like a happy journey and you come out with a smile on your lips and a sense of satisfaction at having discovered a new way of great film making.
